Looks like the days of unlimited data use are coming to end if this story is true.

so we have a brilliant phone with brilliant apps like catchup tv, mobile tv, last fm etc but are gonna be massively restricted with what you can do with he phone.

apps like tom tom may aswell be removed from the app store because you will only get half way before reaching your limit

Surely Orange have data plans at 500megabytes and 750megabytes? So they have nothing to scrap.

The 750mb plans were the unlimited ones which were only a FUP. You could go over with out been charged. I use between 2-3 GB most months on my IPhone with out any problems.

But then with all due respect, old bill2, it is people like you - using up three to four times their fair usage policy - that is making the networks like Vodafone, O2 and probably soon Orange decide to turn their FUPs into fixed data limits.

You're not restricted - you can do as you like with the phone - but expect to pay if you use it heavily. No different from having 500 inclusive minutes and then paying if you use 600 instead, but noone calls that "heavily restricted".

As for Tom Tom, to the best of my knowledge it uses offline storage and downloads very little if anything whilst you're on the move. So it's not going to hit any limits halfway along your journey.

Let's hope all new iPhone 4 customers have WIFI at home and don't travel much.

500MB = 8.33 hours on YouTube.

60 mb an hour for online radio ? ? ? ? maybe for top notch streams but for standard you can cut that by a third.

Just divide the stream kbps rate by 8 and you will get the kilobytes/second it uses.. so
32Kbps = 4KB/s = 12MB/hour
64Kbps = 8KB/s = 23MB/hour
128Kbps = 16KB/s = 57MB/hour

I have the offpeak data plan which I believe has a FUP at 500mb per day.

500mb a day? No chance.

From what I can see it's 1000mb a month.

Quote:
“Unlimited off-peak mobile internet - terms and conditions

Fair usage policy: To ensure the fair allocation of network resources for all customers the Offer may not be used for: modem access for computers, internet based streaming services, voice or video over the internet, Instant Messaging, peer to peer file sharing and non Orange internet based video. If such use is detected, notice may be given and Network protection controls may be applied to all services which Orange does not believe constitute WAP browsing. This may result in a reduced speed of transmission, inability to use such services and, at the discretion of Orange, removal of the Offer. The Offer is subject at all times to a fair usage policy of 1000MB each month. Usage above this amount will constitute abuse & Orange may, at its discretion, monitor usage and withdraw the Offer from your account in the event that the fair usage policy is abused.”

There are also a crapload of restrictions - no streaming video etc.

You have to remember that this is mobile internet, not your home WiFi, the networks just cannot cope with excessive traffic. It's grossly unfair anyway when the fair usage is 500MB and some users think it's OK to use 2-3GB or whatever, it's just affecting everyone else's ability to use the network. If you want more data, you pay for it.

I would gladly buy a larger data bundle if say Orange did one. They seem quite happy to push the dongles with 5/10GB of data ect. but they forget that a phone can be just as data hungry.
I have a business account with Vodafone. Now for all their faults they do a great business data bundle for your phone. £14.00 pm gets you 5GB of data use. I am quite happy to pay this as the phone I use on Vodafone is very data heavy.
