itunes on my laptop

I have recently purchased a laptop and have installed itunes on it. I thought (stupidly) that if I simply put in my email address it would bring up my music/playlists from my old pc. Not so.

Do I need to authorise home sharing?

What is the best way to copy tracks/games over that is on my old itunes? I don't want to sync my ipod and find all my music etc., has disappeared from my ipod. Any suggestions (that a complete technophobic can understand).

Someone told me to buy an external hard drive - is that right and how easy is it to use? Another told me to back up the old itunes to a USB portable device.

I am confused

Find any old usb memory stick.
The bigger the memory stick (capacity) the better.
Say... Find one with 2GB, although any size would be fine.

Plug that into your old computer

Now press start and go to your Music folder. There should be an iTunes folder in there.

Right click the iTunes folder and select "Copy"

Go to your memory stick then right click on a blank space and select "Paste" to copy the entire iTunes folder onto your memory stick.

Once it has finished copying all of the files onto the memory stick, plug it into your laptop.

On the laptop, go to your music folder. There will already be an iTunes folder there.

Then go to your memory stick and copy the iTunes folder.

Paste it into your music folder (NOT in the iTunes folder in your music folder)

It should ask you to overwrite all files with the same name.

Click yes and let it finish.

Open up iTunes and all your files should be there.

Nope that just allows you see and play another iTunes library from a computer on your home network. It's doesn't actually copy or sync anything.

It depends on the size of your iTunes library. An external hard drive has far more capacity then a USB memory stick. Personally I think an external drive is handy to have as you could back up your entire computer, all your documents, photos etc. etc. too.

Hah! Well... At least we know you have a rather large music collection.

I said 2GB just because I was assuming that the OP wouldn't have that much music.

If you authorise home sharing you will be able to copy all music and videos over to your laptop via your network.
