in praise of 2003
theres an ongoing debate on here about 'is todays music as good as in the past', its a theme that often crops up. as an oldie, id like to champion the year 2003, as imho it was the best chart year for decades. ive chosen ten tracks which to me show that modern music (i know, its 7 years ago, but to me its yesterday! lol) is still as good and varied as it ever was.
![]() 1 Queens of the Stoneage - Go with the flow. ... a track that imho is one of the very best rock tracks to hit our charts. id suggest it stands up against the great tracks from the past. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iw1Fm61HBA8 2 Outkast - Hey ya .... a smashing 60's-esque pastiche of american soul/pop, very ike turner or sly stone. a damn good pop track, iconic video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wl6R8u6Zus 3 Blu Cantrell - Breathe ... even sean paul cant spoil this classic bit of blues/soul. what a great voice, pity she couldnt follow this up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKSfgMKw84Q 4 White Stripes - 7 Nation army ... raw blues, guitar very clapton, beck or hendrix, like. as good as anthing john mayalls bluesbreakers created? possibly, a damn respectable second if not! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j7huh5Egew 5 Goldfrapp - Train ... modern electro pop at its best? i think so. i cant fault this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHnYe5Nj0F0 6 Avril Lavigne - Im with you ... the queen of teenage angst? im impressed by her early work and this heartfelt track is just about as good as it gets. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bW2LTnzD-vE 7 DJ Sammy - Sunlight ... 'the sound of the balearics' as he discibes himself. i agree! this example of dance (commercial trance?) is the sound of summer, the mediterrainian, fits the sunshine isles perfectly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBF4A6-9_70 8 Richard x vs Kelis - Finest Dreams ... an intelligent use of sampling and marrying two tracks. sos bands 'the finest' and the human leagues album track off 'dare' 'the things dreams are made of'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2RCjgAooDM 9 Pharrel Williams - Frontin ... one of the best r n b examples of recent years. i like the soulfull vocals set against a gentle track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIBTrN5Odbg 10 Scooter - Maria (i like it loud) ... marmite, love then or hate them, i like their hardcore 'in yer face' unescapeable beats. the audience at their gigs look like they are really having fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVjeheaFfsM so there you have it, a collection of imho classic pop music, variety, and id suggest as good as anything from the past! |

But on a personal level I'd also add: M.I.A - Galang Sigur Rós - Vaka (Untitled 1) Massive Attack - Special Cases (feat. Sinead O'Connor) Skin - Trashed Skin - Faithfulness Skin - Lost/Getting Away With It (I love Skin )Snow Patrol - Spitting Games Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Date With The Night Yeah Yeah Yeahs - PIN The late 90s early 00s were best for me I think. |

P!nk's "Family Portrait" was an amazing song. (released in 2002 in north america, 2003 in europe) as was Christina Aguilera's "Fighter". I like all of the songs on your list, too.

i tried to define my list by variety encompasing differing genres... the notion being to illustrate what was to me on a personal level that 2003 was a good year. i could have picked other years out of the 00's but 03 seems my best.
there are some years that id really struggle on to compile ten differing tracks that i like. actually, ive possibly misses of 'pop' or 'pure pop'.. perhaps s club 8 'sundown' would fit?.. |

Before 2003 I found Shania Twain a reasonable enough singer but without standing out. However, she then released Ka-Ching and I have rated her much more highly ever since. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtrwzdILTF8
I know your thread on 60s gems Mushymanrob. Well, just like 60s music I think Ka-Ching has a fresh and quirky sound that will still sound good in more than 40 years time! |

odd.. it was a top ten hit but i hadnt heard it before!...however, shes not really my taste although this is good by her standards. its also odd that a woman of her wealth is singing such a song!
"When you're broke go and get a loan Take out another mortgage on your home Consolidate so you can afford To go and spend some more when you get bored" She was trying to warn us!!!!!!! ![]()

2003 reminds me of my last year in school. Loved Blu Cantrell! And Richard X and Kelis. Both songs take me right back to year 11!!

I was 12 and remember some of those songs but in terms of memorability for me it isn't quite up there i think 1999-2007 was a great period of music but after 08 there has been little in the way of fantastic music 09 was a good year for me though. For 2003 thogh i would add Kylie's Slow that song and video is what stands out for me.

2003....my final year of primary and first year of secondary school....brilliant year for music too.
Madonnas American Life album/era caused en masse stir and over time has become my all time favourite album from 2003 AND one of my top 5 albums ever. Speaking of which 2003 was a year where Pop did experiment with styles a lot more/taking a gamble and seeing popstarlets/icons really take a gamble....the likes of Britney for example made her IMO finest album with In The Zone incorporating Moby into the fold as well as Bloodshy & Avant. Kylie made the only album of hers i genuinely think is totally great as she alluded to Princes hey day/Synthpop on Body Language. Also i love goldfrapp appreciation here....Black CHerry, behind American Life, is my second favourite album of 2003...its their best album IMO and is Synthpop at its most gritty and magical definitely. Ah memories of 2003 one of the finest years in music of the past decade....2004 and 5 i thought were great too and 2008 had great memories for me too

I am just reading through this thread - and the majority of songs I love are from 2003. I miss the early 00's.
At the age of 22 now - I am not to sure if I am getting old for music these days or if its just crap? |
