well to be fair it would be a very unique new revenue stream for ITV, I believe The Zone has some gambling, so ITV is cleary not above gambling.

Maybe the next Corrie killer will be the one with the odds of 125/1, and ITV put some cash on that character.

I can't believe that people in my office are also thinking it was deliberate, or some form of bet.

ITV response (not reading last 20-odd pages to see if anyone else has had the same)

Having checked, this is the same as previously in media.

An error by ITV’s transmission providers, Technicolor, meant that ITV1 HD’s coverage of the England v USA match was interrupted for approximately 20 seconds. ITV1’s standard definition coverage was unaffected....

pointing the finger:

Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding HD viewing of the England v USA World Cup football match.

An error by ITV’s transmission providers, Technicolor, meant that ITV1 HD’s coverage of the England v USA match was interrupted for approximately 20 seconds. ITV1’s standard definition coverage was unaffected.

ITV immediately investigated this issue and a preliminary report has indicated that the cause of the problem was human error at Technicolor, in London. ITV's Sport production team in South Africa, who have produced high quality coverage throughout the tournament, were in no way responsible.

Richard Cross, Group Technology Director, ITV plc said: “We apologise unreservedly to viewers for the unacceptable interruption to high definition coverage of the match. We met with Technicolor first thing this morning to put in place measures to address the issue and to ensure that Technicolor takes the appropriate action with immediate effect."

May I take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to contact us here at ITV as we always welcome viewers’ feedback

I just got the same E mail from ITV as well!!!!!!

I just got the same response. An automated reply, showing how many people, quite rightly complained.

For what it was worth, I copied my e-mail complaint to the FA, as it was reported at the time they brought in ITV to explain what happened when it occurred during the Everton v Liverpool game.

Probably it'll mean sweet FA, but considering this has happened now twice in just over a year, it doesn't really instil any confidence in any future ITV football broadcasts.

Yeah same here. No signature which indicates it was sent in bulk, most likely to the many thousands of complaints that they received.

The response is a bit of a fob off really as it did not go into any detail about the lack of HD during the rest of the game which was the 2nd part of my email to them.

And it will mean sweet FA as the FA will sell to the highest bidder 9 times out of 10. Wouldn't the whole ITV Digital-Football League deal collapsing have had more of an effect than an instance of human error?

That and the FA have nothing to do with TV rights for the FIFA World Cup. Why doesn't everyone distressed by this email them, OFCOM, ITV, David Cameron and The Samaritans as well....

The difference here is that the World Cup is a "Crown Jewel" event, it does not go to the highest bidder.

Therefore, there is a national interest involved in this instance. The same thing would apply if Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland were involved....

Right can we now close this. Its getting silly.

1/ It wasnt ITV fault it was yet agains TNS - No doubt that contract will end soon.

2/ Why are people moaning on here just after the goal. You might have missed action while being sad on here.

3/ You should thing yourself lucky that the world cup is on here FTA and HD yu could be in any number of coutries were is PTA or in samolia where they will beat you for watching it.

4/ In the last 48 hours the said has happened.

a- Virgin media TV crashed during the Saturday afternoon games.
b- Sky News cut to ad's while doing a report about ITV1 HD
c- Next on BBC One is the news where you are - Cut to Caption followed by programme ad.

I don't remember many such laughable errors when this work was done in house by ITV.

Technicolor don't seem up to the job.

I guess they were the wrong choice and Richard Cross and other ITV managers who made the decision got it badly wrong.

Richard Cross is an IT manager with little or no experience of transmission operations of a large commercial broadcaster.

These are the same people outsourcing IT to Accenture!

The only people who should get sacked are the jerks that make these decisions not some lowly paid, inexperienced tape jockey at Technicolor.

Why don't you quit Richard?

The far bigger problem for ITV is that 3 secs were cut from a sponsers advertisement leaving viewers bemused & the sponsor livid. They really know how to shoot their own feet at ITV, management must take the flak for poor performance & bad decisions....

This is not going to go away any time soon because people want answers.
And if Michael Grade has any balls he will get answers as well.

1. Which exact person pressed which switch to kill the HD feed from South Africa? As we have already seen, other European broadcasters did not suffer a break in their feed, or if they did, their system was set up to continue coverage after a short (anything up to a second?) break. Did they use the same satellite to downlink?

2. Did this person have access to delay-free coverage?

3. Were any of the same personnel/subcontractors involved in the Liverpool - Everton debacle? Once may be considered unfortunate, twice is downright inexcusable.....

4. Whose policy is (/was) it to go to an advert break rather than SD coverage?

5. Was there any involvement, either official or unofficial, from any organisations which would benefit from ITV losing World Cup coverage in particular, and from ITVs demise in general?

I do. In 2003 the northern half of the ITV network lost the end of a Formula 1 race because the cue to play the post race ad break was sent when there were two laps to go. Unlike on Saturday they didn't get back to the action within 30 seconds. Infact viewers sat through the entire ad break before the pictures returned- after the race had ended.

So yes, these mistakes could happen in house.

According to one national newspaper some bookmakers were offering odds on an interuption in television transmittion of the England game. The chances of this happening at all, multiplied by the chance of it happening to the only channel where there was a time lag in broadcast, multiplied by the chance of it happening at that exact minute, make it highly improbable that it was an accident.

Your missing my point.

The World Cup is the biggest sporting event on the planet. England's opening game in a world cup should be like the crown jewels to ITV, guarded closely and cherished. We are not talking about a mickey mouse minority sport like formula one are we?

Never, to the best of my knowledge, did ITV make such a monumental cock up on such a prestigious event when they provided their own transmission services.

There were major mistakes once they started to consolidate these services into the two in house centres. As I said this was the start of the problem of too few people trying to look after too many channels.

Nearly everything that comes out of ITV is a mistake of some sort.

I actually dont understand this attituide, ITV is more than capable of this kind of cock up on its other channels, not watching ITV HD is not going to protect you from ITV errors.

The only way to do that, is to not watch ITV, which I am in no way encouraging.
