Better.

I was a bit fed up of DT after the christmas specials even though I liked him up to that point and he is a brilliant actor. I was incredibly relieved that the replacement wasnt James Nesbitt (wasnt that a rumour) and then I was slightly alarmed when I saw how young MS was.

But he has been absolutely fantastic and I really think the whole sensibility of the programme is much more like it used to be. In other words more essence of Whoness and sort of less Americano-homogenised. But that sounds like I am carping over the previous era which actually does deserve credit for such a successful revival.

The main point is Matt Smith has done an incredible job.

I'm loving the Matt love as well. Didn't expect this when I started this thread! Knew he'd be mainly popular but was expecting one dissenter somewhere along the line. Maybe after all these positive threads they're afraid of getting lynched!!!!

When I saw the "confidential" I was very surprised by Matt's sudden appearance, but then saw what he was doing with his hands, and that hair and I thought.,,,,hang on, this could be brilliant if done right.

I trusted that Moffat wasn't going to cast someone who couldn't do the job.

I was right! Smith has been an absolute revelation in the role and has clearly done his research. He has captured aspects of previous Doctor's to a T without hindering his own characterisation. He has been and will no doubt continue to be, Brilliant!!!

I had high hopes for him as I trusted Moffat's judgement. My high hopes were met and then some. A fantastic Doctor.

Smith: better than expected, and I expected him to be really good.

Smith's first series: a bit of a disappointment. The arc has been too prominent, the stories too slender.

I concur with all of this.

He has been better then I expected him to be, I think the time was right for a new doctor even though I didn't want DT to leave.

I agree, but I think I've aired my views on this series enough on the lacking thread. What I will say is that Matt Smith has made the episodes I don't like so much more enjoyable and I'm hoping next series the stories and his performances come together to make it a more consistent one.

thing is, I think the most important thing about this series was to ensure they have the right man in the role.

As much as I have loved this series, I actually think they are really only just getting started here...they have laid down the foundations on which to build.

He is awful, hate everything he has done to my much loved character. Can not wait for him to regenerate.

Spoiler

I jest of course, love the bloke. He is brilliant in the role and I love how he seems to do something new with the Doctor's personality each week.

Well, speaking truthfully, Matt Smith has been a huge dissapointment for me, unfortunately.

Have what? The majority? I don't think this thread is of a competative nature, just opinions.

My thoughts ^

To my mind there seems to be much more of a connection between this series and the classic series. Whilst I really like DT and CE, Matt Smith comes over as a more doctor-y doctor and its easier to see him as the same person who battled Mechanoids, Yeti, Draconians, Zygons, The Mara etc. Not just because of the flashbacks in this series, but Matt has captured the essence of our favourite timelord to a tee.

I agree with the comments about feeling slightly short-changed with some of the stories. Is it the current format, are we hankering after the 25 minute episodes x 4 or 6 with a cliff-hanger at the end of each episode? I'm not sure that would work nowadays, but perhaps we need more two and three parters to give time to develop the ancillary characters better? Probably the start of a different thread!

I mostly agree with the second point (wholeheartdly agree with the first)...but mostly in terms of the earlier part of the series....most of them, especailly, what started of as a brilliant story for me, the angel two parter....but the later part of the series has mostly pushed the arc stuff to the last ten minutes....so that works for me...although, there has been more stories this year that have left me feeling a bit disappointed than any of the previous series....

But to take it back on point...Matt is definitelt the best thing about it...and for him alone I can sit through the not so favourite stories this year....I love DT's Doctor, he is still my number one, but by leaving he has left us a chnce to recieve a brilliant gift in Matt!!!

lord.. here I am , I almost finished a wonderful essay on why CE may have not liked Doctor Who ( in a nutshell, it was not Friends in the North, sorry baby,,you wanted to work with RTD and he was doing Doctor Who, live with it),
Anyhow, Matt- I did like CE and DT, CE intense,, maybe his doctor was close enough to the time wars,,, good call in hiring , all of "us" became interested... ( us is the old who fans or scifi fans) , then he left,,,,
, then we got DT, cutie pie,, too bad in this century the demographics wanted romance.. flirt, wink ( I can deal with that,, lord knows I have done it,,,, but not with a man travelling in time,,,,,welll hmmm ),,, sorry I digress ( alot) anyway
, DT with RTD scripts became godly, was this the point? Did this mean anything..
.
Matt? a breath of fresh air---
critic? How many us of actually regenrated in a TARDIS? He does not act "human? hmm, is he supposed to act human? 11 lives,, he supposed to know human life?.
amy? abit brash I admit,, however there must be a point... Matt is very good, he is an old soul in a youthful persona - that is the Doctor, my doctor, that is all I want...

Matt Smith has been far, far better than I thought he would be

When he was first cast I thought "oh no", but he has been fabulous so far.

I can't believe that we are almost at the end of his first series already. Will be getting withdrawal symtoms in 2 weeks time.

Just rewatched most of this series and have to reiterate, Matt has been fabulous. I love the little skip he does when he walks and his little tag on words at the end of sentences. Like in TBB when he says 'I'm going to do what I always do and stay out of trouble...badly.'
