I get what you mean, but think of it like this. Sky, you pay Sky a monthly subscription, now, you could throw a 1TB hard drive into your box and record like entire seasons of TV shows and films onto that thing to playback whenever you want, but the moment you stop paying Sky, you lose that. The content is still on your hard drive but you don't have a right to play it anymore, until of course you re-subscribe, and then you'll be able to play all the stuff you've recorded again.
This is essentially a subscription service for games, with both old and new games mixed in, you pay a one off yearly charge and get to download the games and play them as much as you want as long as you remain a subscriber.
