The cut down version of Drive Club say to me that this will be a problem as well. They want to try to offer good content but its will be hard to offer content of the same quality as PS3 in the first 12months.

PS3 gives good content because they are great games that are 8-12+ months old. PS4 will not have any content like that for 8-12months. I think the cut down Drive Club is the compromise they have found to give something big away early. I hope cut down versions don't become a trend TBH as it could mean poorer content in the future for PS+ on PS4.
Indeed. With the PS3 they had to offer good content to get people to sign up. With the PS4 there isn't as much pressure as one of the main reasons new people would sign up is to play online. Extra free content is just a bonus to them, even if it's poorer than what it used to be like on the PS3.

It will be long term PS+ members that will notice the drop in quality and value for money.

It's a worry, as it stands PS+ is amazing.

I hope that Microsoft keep their Games for Gold scheme as a permanent system as that will encourage good content on both platforms.

It could all be a moot point in the end though if Gaikai streaming subscriptions or tiered PS+ packages come into effect. The incentive to supply better content would always be there to drive people to better packages.

I think this is where Sony's push to court indie devs could pay off, as there's a chuck of stuff there which they can give away. They'll probably try and keep us sweet with betas, discounts and exclusive demos for the first year.

PS Vita didn't have PS+ straight away, it took a year after the Japanese launch to start. But when it did, the software was surprising good, with no hesitation giving away full, big name titles.

So yeah, a slow first year I think, but when it picks up it will be great.

What's refreshing about Sony's approach, is that even though PS4 online gaming has gone behind the dreaded pay wall (albeit with promises of massive investment in their network) they have actually opened things up a bit for non-subscribers with features such as auto-updates being made available to all PS4 owners. Meanwhile, Microsoft are locking more and more away inside Xbox Live Gold, so much that the Xbox One's feature set is practically crippled without it.

What current free features of Live are they putting behind the paywall?

Not currently free features, but new things like Game DVR, Skype and One Guide (for plugging in your Sky Box) will all require XBL Gold on Xbox One.

Whereas Game capture, party chat, and ALL third-party video apps are available on PS4 without a PS+ subscription.

So what other features besides auto-updating are now going to be free on the PS4?

Aren't those new features? fastest finger seemed to suggest Sony were making more things free which right now you have to pay for on the PS3.

I'm wondering if Sony are including those FTP such as Planetside, Warframe etc as PS+ "free games" nothings really been said yet, on how you get the games, just that they are free to play.

And I did read on another forum that Drive Club would only be free to existing PS+ members not new ones subscribing after PS4 launch not sure how true that is.

Ah, good point, it's just the auto-updating which is going free afaik, cloud saves remain a part of PS+.

I've definitely read somewhere that any FTP games will be free to purchase and play (even online) without a PS+ subscription.

They wouldn't be free to play if they were part of PS+ though.

Well yes they would IE. no subs required to actually play, but they haven't said how you go about actually getting the games yet, have they?

To me FTP means no monthly subs, it doesn't mean Free to Purchase.

FTP means free to play, if I have to pay anything before I start playing to access that content its no longer free to play.

And thats where confusion lies, Guild Wars is FTP but you still have to buy the actual game! Until SONY actually say how it's going to work, we're all confused...lol

I think the FTP games will only be available to those who have PS+ to be honest. Due to the lack of games Sony can offer to give away for free they might fall back on these FTP games to "give away" instead.

Also it would save on any confusion as to what you can and can't play online without PS+.

There is no confusion - this is an official Sony video where PS Access answered a few users' questions:

http://youtu.be/kYbpyh4EP6g?t=43s

FTP games, those which are free to download and play, will be available to play online without a PS+ subscription.

Anything that's offered as a free game via PS+ does not count as FTP, as it's available for a price to non-subscribers.

FTP = Free To Play - for all users, you only have to pay if you want that new gun/skin/vehicle etc.

So, Warframe, Planetside 2, Warthunder & Blacklight retribution can be played and played online without paying a penny to anyone, other than the cost of a PS4 and your Internet service provider's monthly bill.

.

Hang about, so you end up paying a monthly sub to Sky, Lovefilm, netflix etc as WELL AS a sub to Xbox Live Gold just to also access the xbox one guide function???

The mind boggles why people put up with that!

Me either, doesn't the XBox dash also have ads on it? I always thought it was weird that the free online (PS3) has no ads, while the paid (XBL) does. You would expect it to be the other way round.

Anywho, I'm looking forward to the next update, I haven't really loved the last couple of months' games. Not that I mind, my sub paid for itself months ago.
