New Iphone Prices....Are Apple taking the P***
Got an email yesterday asking me if I wanted to pre-order the new Iphone. When I opened it up is said $199 or $299.
I thought that wasnt to bad then noticed the $ signs. So then I switched to the UK site. Prices then rocketed to £499 and £599 Apple are seriously taking the piss here. How can a product be more than double in UK than in America? question - can you order the iphone 4 from America and it will it work over here? Probably not |

The US prices you are quoting are the prices subject to a 24 month contract with AT&T. The UK prices you are quoting are the prices for the device sim free with no contract. Hence the difference

That is indeed a little insane for a PAYG phone but to be honest I am not all that suprised.

Those prices are not bad considering that they are sim free. When Orange accused me of losing the Nokia N82 that I had returned to them in the post, the quoted replacement price was £500, and that was over 2 years ago.
Now a question: if I were to buy an iPhone, would my Desire sim work in it, once cut to size, or does it have to be an iPhone specific sim? Cheers. BTW I do like my Desire and its a much cheaper deal so I'll probably wait until iPhone 6 when my contract is up. |

£499 is very reasonable considering it's SIM free - you can't even compare that to PAYG. Other SIM free pricing:
8gb Samsung Galaxy S - £479.99 Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 - £449.99 |

Nearly £400 and £500 for the new iPhone is ridiculous in my opinion.I got the iPhone 3g and payed £350 for that.and tbh I still cringe about it now,but no way will I be paying that sort of money for the new one.

These prices are totally in line with what they've charged previously, and pretty much the norm for SIM free higher end mobiles. |

I presume when you say "once cut to size" you're not thinking of taking a pair of scisors to it?
i think the mini sim comes on the same credit card size plastic and has the option of you making a normal sim or mini sim depending on how you remove it (a normal sim you push the sim out of the credit card size plastic, you do that with mini sim, then remove the excess) |

Indeed - they are also in line with the US prices too, as AT&T will be offering the iPhone 4 their with "No Commitment" for $599 (16GB) and $699 (32GB) respectively, which when converted into £ and VAT is added comes to £485 and £566 respectively. I'm not sure if "No Commitment" is strictly subsidy free or not, but they will still be locked to AT&T, so in fact the UK SIM free, unlocked and unsubsidised prices aren't that bad at all (and some prices for equivalent prices SIM free have also been quoted).
The PAYG prices may be slightly lower (given that they will probably be network locked and may have a small subsidy attached), but the contract prices will certainly be lower - and probably similar to what the 3GS 16GB / 32GB prices were. |

probably is, as you can literally cut the surplus plastic away on a normal sim. the actual "chip" part is only about 1cm. there is a sim cutter you can order online that would let you cut any sim to size, and there is a plastic adapter that makes a mini sim fit a normal sim, so you can reverse the process
i think the mini sim comes on the same credit card size plastic and has the option of you making a normal sim or mini sim depending on how you remove it (a normal sim you push the sim out of the credit card size plastic, you do that with mini sim, then remove the excess) By the way, Micro Sim is the term for the new sims... Mini Sim is the actual name for what people are calling the normal sim. |

£500 and £600 are REALLY pushing it, even I'm having second thoughts, just above £400 is my limit for a phone. But these are sim free after all, will wait to see what the networks have to offer

In relation to other SIM free phones the price of the iphone 4 is pretty in line and not bad considering what you are getting compared to the others.
I think the point we need to consider is is this value for money? No it isn't £600 is way to much for what it actually does. The prices are over inflated, but because people will pay them the companies can charge that kind of money for them. In relation I can buy a PS3 a Wii and an Xbox 360 and still have change left over for some games for the same amount fo money I have just spent on a phone. The consoles can do so much more than the iphone and the fact that I would get three gadgets for my money proves that phone prices are over inflated. If we were to see the same strategy as games consoles have been sold for, the phone companies would sell the phones for a break even or loss price and make their money back on app sales. Instead we see them making a fortune from each phone plus still raking it in with the apps. It's not hard to see why they carry on the way they have always done, but it does mean an unfairer and less value for money market for the consumer. |

I'm currently with O2 and have the iPhone 3G and my contract runs out on 23rd June. I pay £35 pcm for 600 mins, but really I use it to check emails, etc., receive calls, but make very few calls.
The iPhone used to be a good phone when it was released but it really isn't that impressive any more. The world has moved on - Adroid phones appear to have the edge. I'm torn as to whether to get an iPhone 4G or HTC Desire. http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/...47/p31043.aspx The HTC Desire is FREE and 600mins costs £25. Why would I want to pay £35 for 600mins, and more money to upgrade my iPhone 3G to an iPhone 4G ? Anyone any idea who much the upgrade would be on O2? |

For the £550 or even £500 you could get a really nice new PC or Laptop or maybe even a 52in TV if you look around.

I think I'll wait until June 2011, when the 8GB iPhone 4 becomes £300.
I can put up with my GeeEs for another year.
