But there will be.
But you constantly moan about how rubbish your iPhone is, and how you regret lining the pockets of apple, so why would want to buy another iPhone?!

But if youre willing to pay £500 for a phone, why would you then compare and say 'oh, well I could buy a laptop or a tv which wont do anything that I want to phone to do'? I see what you mean but it doesnt really make sense. You could say that about buying a car - you could go for a holiday instead.
It's comparible value for money. The iphone or any other phone is not good value for money when you consider what else you can get with the same pot of money.

I'm of the thinking that when I book a holiday I think I could spend that £500+ on something that is goint to last me a few years (at least) not just a week. I think holidays are a waste of money when I could do so much more with it, which is why I haven't paid for one in a few years.

I'm currently with O2 and have the iPhone 3G and my contract runs out on 23rd June. I pay £35 pcm for 600 mins, but really I use it to check emails, etc., receive calls, but make very few calls.

The iPhone used to be a good phone when it was released but it really isn't that impressive any more. The world has moved on - Adroid phones appear to have the edge.

I'm torn as to whether to get an iPhone 4G or HTC Desire.

http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/...47/p31043.aspx

The HTC Desire is FREE and 600mins costs £25. Why would I want to pay £35 for 600mins, and more money to upgrade my iPhone 3G to an iPhone 4G ?

I don't know what the upgrade price will be on O2, but it seems like a waste of money. The iPhone offers no better features than the HTC Desire, and the HTC Desire has better speed (obvious difficult to compare to iPhone 4G).

I'd have the holiday.

Im moving from Android and whilst it is great when you first get it, its a bit of a pain to have to dig to change things. The customisation is great if yuo enjoy that sort of thing however after being happy with my ipod touch, the instant features appeal over being able to add widgets or change which clock I use. Different strokes for different folks tho!

The Nexus One also seems to be very popular.

O2 are the only ones so far to use the 2 in 1 approch, Vodafone iPad Micro sims are on a sepperate card to normal sims.

By the way, Micro Sim is the term for the new sims... Mini Sim is the actual name for what people are calling the normal sim.
oh yeah, didn't some of the really old phones take the full credit card size thing. i vaguely recall motorola flip phones like that in the 90s

That's just plain stupid.

Value for money depends on whether you get what you want for a price you feel happy with, not what else you could buy, that you don't actually want, for the same money.

If you look at my post #28, are there a couple of reasons why I'd spend more money and get the iPhone 4G, rather than the HTC Desire? Bear in mind I already have the iPhone 3G and have almost reached the end of my 18-month contract (days). Doesn't this Android phone have the same, and more, functionality than the Apple? Am I missing something? I neither an Apple lover, nor hater, it's just a phone. Those of that type are now looking all the same, similar specs, similar capabilities in terms of facebook, twitter, email, qwerty k/b on-screen - they even allow you to make those old-fashioned voice calls

What's so special about the iPhone? Can anyone on this sub-forum convince me? Has this been discussed before on another thread?

The 8GB 3GS will be £385 with Orange.

Subsidised on PAYG though. Still, if you pay £15 to unlock it you've still saved £20 over the SIM free version.

Jees, people like to point the 'Your opinion is stupid' finger when they don't agree with something!!!

I do not recall ever saying that I didn't or wouldn't happen to want the alternative items I could by with the £600 I have spent on the iphone. In fact I have a PS3 a Wii a DS and a PSP, all of those together come in at under the £600 and is therefore good value for money that I can buy all of those items against the cost of buying one phone, regardless of if i'm happy with it.

The bottom line is that the iphone and most other high end phones are overpriced and poor value for money for what you can do with them. It is what it is though, and I've saved up the money for the iphone. It doesn't stop it from being expensive or poor value for money even if I like it and am happy with it. I want the phone so I pay the price I have to pay to get it, doesn't mean I have to think that is good value for money.

Now, don't be so quick to point the stupid finger in future

Seen quite a lot of these threads about the cost of the iPhone. At the end of the day any product / service is only worth what people are prepared to pay for it.

Given that 600,000 iPhone 4 handsets have been pre-ordered - there are 600,000 people, me included, that it's on sale for a fair price and reflects market conditions in terms of other handsets / devices that are available.

Its all relative to your circumstances - to some people £600 is a lot of money, to others its a couple days work. If you put the price into context of many other things people choose to spend their money - its not that 'much'. Example - in the office this morning i told someone that i was getting the iPhone and had paid £600 . .response was 'that's far too much for a phone'. . yet this guy was away on stag do last week and spent £400 in 3 days . . .he's got the memories of it (vaguely) but not much else to show for it.

Rambled on a bit - point i am trying to make is stop banging on about the price of the iPhone - if you want one, can afford it then get one . ..if not then stop with the bleating . .

Something to keep in mind.. most of the mobile recycle companies give at least £70 for the first gen iphones. Not sure how they can do that but they do.. could offset the cost of an upgrade quite nicely.

Very true - be they from Nokia, Samsung, Apple, HTC, etc. - the higher end are generally overpriced, but thats what the market thinks they're worth.

No doubt the components in most of these don't cost that much, and there's some huge markups - but to be honest, so what? If someones willing to pay, thats between them and their bank account.

Me, I'm just happily waiting for Dell to ship me the Mini 10 that I ordered a few days back

I don't think the iphone4 sim free prices are too bad considering apples track record although still a little over priced compared to other similar makes - I think £449 for the 16Gb and £534 for the 32Gb would have been fairer prices and take into account the built-in flash memory.

What is a ripoff is the amount the networks charge for one - £400 HTC Desire is free on £25pm (actually mine was free on £20pm), yet a £499 iphone4 is £189 and £30pm - how can £99 more expensive than the Desire equate to adding £189 + 24 x £5pm more for the iphone? Apart from the networks greed and knowing people will pay extra for an iphone the only other reason for the price disparity I can think of is apple insist on a cut of the networks revenue which is passed to the consumer and HTC and the rest) do not.
