ALW knew he had a role coming up with Maria - I don't think there's another ALW musical coming up - he's got Dorothy and LND to open in the US. You also have to ask who he seems to go for and Summer Strallen/Connie Fisher figures seem to be it even when I would have gone for Aoife Mulholland. He may have watched Julie Andrews too much in his youth.....He's also got a thing about writing roles for young sopranos which again doesn't help Stephanie.
We don't know what role was offered in Flashdance or the economics or teh contract length or how much acting it offered. There's also a calculation on how many people are going for a limited number of MT roles for young actors. TV acting might constrain you but then so might dancing shows.
There's also a lot of ALW girls who have successfully gone down roads you wouldn't have predicted from what we saw on TV. Don't know yet if Sam can act Eponine but she wasn't an obvious candidate from her acting on the show, Rachel's acting talents were not that visible on the show, Niamh didn't get to show what she does in LND, Siobhan didn't hint at an inner Sally Bowles, Leanne didn't show she could play Cosette brilliantly. You certainly wouldn't have known that Jessie could act Anne in ALNM or might decide to go down an acting route. Going down the TV route and picking up the acting skills on the way might well be another successful change.
