Nokia Free Sat Nav- 5800

Hello all

(This could be an extremely silly question but I might as well check!)

I have a 5800 ExpressMusic, and downloaded the Ovi Map software which includes a sat nav.

Say I want to use the sat nav to perform street by street voice instructions, would I be incurring any data charges?

I have no data plan at the moment with Orange. Also, would I incur charges for simply using the map?

Thanks

Its not a silly question in the slightest.

1. You've done the first step - installing the application.
2. If you haven't already, download and install the "Nokia Maps" application onto your PC.
3. Use the desktop Maps application to select and download the maps relevant to wherever you are (or want to go) onto your phone. The maps vary in size - I've got UK and Florida on mine, they're about 100 meg each.
4. If you don't mind too much about the startup speed of the GPS (ie. time to lockon), you can disable the network side - on the 5230 its the "Location" application, in there go to "Positioning", select "Positioning methods" and uncheck everything bar "Integrated GPS".

The phone can use AGPS/WiFi/Network based to speed up the initial lockon speed, but this can result in a small amount of data being used.

Thanks for that, I followed your instructions and it seems to be working(GPS kicks in after 5-10 mins).

Haven't actually tested it out in the car yet but shall do soon!

I think it only takes a couple of minutes to get a lock on the 5230; could be worth your checking the firmware on your 5800. Later firmwares (at least on the 5230) improve GPS lockon speed.

It will take longer to get an initial lock because of turning off the A-GPS. Couple that with a poor view of the sky and it could easily take 5 minutes to get a lock.
You are correct its a good idea to keep the firmware up to date.
