In my opinion, buy an Android phone if you want to use a phone the way YOU want to.

Buy an iphone if you want to use a phone the way Steve Jobs wants you too.

I'm probably going to regret this, but, as I'm in the market for a phone. What are the key differences.

I'll lay my cards on the table. I'm a phone "geek" who used to upgrade religiously every year - and I've had many generations of smartphone on the market. (yes, I've been through various Nokia's incl the Communicator, Sony P800 & 900. Numerous HTC's the last was the TitanII.

Then I got the iPhone and haven't felt the need to change in two and a half years.

What's Android got to make me change my (open) mind?

I personally think the iphone is over rated and over priced. If the monthly costs were cheaper i'd be interested but £40p/m i got a nokia X3(ok not the best of phones but it does what i need it to do) with a ps3 slim 250gb for £25p/m lol.

I'm not interested on the upcoming Apple handset. I feel it would be like taking a step back from my current handset, the Desire. The iphone may have HD recording but that's no big deal to me, it was a feature I had in my last phone and I never used it.

I'm perfectly happy with my phone. To me,they're far too overpriced and are just a fashion accessory. If I wanted a phone to do all that I'd go for an Android phone that works properly.NOT a Desire

Are you suggesting that the Desire doesn't work properly?

I've spend 2 weeks researching phones - just smartphones like the iPhone 4 and HTC, and similar phones. I've ordered the HTC Desire because, in my opinion, the number of positive opinions expressed on the web, and in review videos makes it clear that the HTC Desire is probably one of th best handsets to get.

I could have gone for the HTC HD2 - but that's running Windows Mobile 6.5 and Microsoft is releasing version 7, which is completely re-written from the ground up, and quite different, and so may never run on the HD2. The iPhone is ruled out on cost grounds, because there is no functionality on it that I want and can't get on the HTC Desire. The HTC Desire appears to have more memory than other HTC phones. As I said, once I had identified the HTC Desire as best spec, I looked at reviews across the web and found most were positive.

The HTC EVO 4G isn't coming to Europe any time soon as we don't have WiMax - so there's no point, yet.

What did I miss that you say the HTC Desire isn't a good phone. Why do you say it doesn't work 'properly' ?

To be fair to Apple, they have led the way in terms of sleek design, great number of applications, and innovative features such as the use of capacitative touch screens on a mass market mobile and so for leading the way they do deserve credit.

However, there are some downsides too. As soran has indicated above, Apple (and Steve Jobs) have a dogmatic and idiosyncratic view towards certain applications and content such as the refusal to compromise over Adobe Flash which has led to a decreased user experience.

There is also the hideously large price tag attached to the iPhone range and, for some, £500 for a mobile is going to deter them and send them in the direction of Android mobiles. I certainly couldn't justify it (although I could afford it) and I'm quite happy with a mobile that cost below £100.

Finally, there's the ethical aspect. That pressure to deliver Apple iPhones has led to a spate of suicides in the factories that make iPhones because of the stress on the workers. Apple's response has been decidedly complacent on this issue and that's unfortunate.

Personally, if I knew that a mobile manufacturer was either using illegal kiddie labour or treating their workers harshly then I'd like to think that I wouldn't buy their product.

I wasn't going to comment, but I hate the "end of" statement.

End of what? Coherent thought?

Those who are happy with an HTC - great. Those who are happy with the iPhone - great also.

I will, ultimately, be getting an iPhone because of the "no fuss" (call it being dictated to, if you will) approach.

I use Macs, because the industry I'm in uses them. Consequently an Apple product will work with other Apple products seamlessly. More than can be said for my attempts to get windows Mobile to work with Windows, or worse, Symbian.

I can't comment on Android as I haven't used it. People doseem to like it though, and that's great, as it obviously works. About time.”

well seems as you are being picky about what i can and cannot finnish my statements off with, why do you finnish yours with "about time" about time for what ? ? ?

i was merely saying that stlye over substance is appl iphone all over. end of - meaning there is no argument left to say. its a fact that for the price of a iphone a much better spec,d phone can be bought.
is that ok ? ? ?
and if you hate the "end of" statement i suggest you try and do something more productive than hating how other people end there comments. just a thought

I'm not getting one.

Bought a BB Bold 9700 towards the end of last year. Unless I sell it, I can't justify dropping a few hundred on another phone.

Coincidentally my HTC Desire should be coming on the 24th (don't let me down again dial-a-phone!)

iPhone is nice and what not but I don't exactly have money to throw around unfortunately.
