Don't you hate it when artists talk about their next album and say stuff like......

This new album is more....

mature
edgier
more me
grown up
experimental
darker
a fresher sound
more creative

but then it ends up sounding exactly the same as the last album.

sorry it really annoys me.

'this album reflects where I am in my life right now' - that's another one

Yes very annoying. And also annoying is when fans automatically dismiss the artist's last album as rubbish or poor compared to the newly released one.

'Futuristic' is the one I hate the most. My perception is that if you have to call your own album futuristic then it generally means it's either dated by about 2-4 years or it's just plain stupid (like Metal Machine Music, for instance).

No it doesn't bother me. Always funny how the smallest things wind people up.

I don't mind them saying such things if it's actually true (Rihanna's last album was a good example - they said it would be edgier and it certainly was), but the album they are talking about does often end up being pretty much the same as the last.

Would you rather they said that "it sounds just like the last one. And the one before that. And the one before that."?

Oh I hate this one especially when you rush to listen to it after months of excitement and it turns out to be awful

its also annoying when I get followed around by certain people on the music forum that feel the need to comment on my every post, no matter how controversial or banal... I mean i'm not that influential

I don't follow you around mate. More often than not your threads (and you make a lot) are pointless. I just "point" this out.

It is kind of dumb, but I think Metal Machine Music was a bad example- a couple of decades later there was a thriving scene of bands who sounded just like it, so it actually DID turn out to be futuristic. I don't think anyone foresaw that happening though.

Exactly. As corny as some of these expressions are, ("This next album is a complete change of direction") for example, they are obviously the only ways artists can talk about their new work.

and thats why alot of people comment on them.... ok

I can't help it if I like to add a little variety from the "chart predictions" "first week sales predictions" "what will be the next single from the saturdays album" threads

AKA "back to our roots" / "back to where we started" - just as used

No, I just go in any threads that I feel like posting in. Am I not entitled to a point of view?

You haven't left them anything else to say!

I do sometimes hope for more interesting answers but hey I've never made an album, maybe that's what they are!

Biggest crime was MGMT who proudly stated that nothing on their second album sounded like "kids" or "time to pretend".

Sadly these were the 2 reasons most people bought the first record, and the main reason anyone had heard of MGMT. In other words we're going to reject everything that made us successfull and stick two fingers up to the two songs that will be paying our bills for the rest of our lifes.

I had the great pleasure (well, actually, horribly starstruck and tongue-tied awkwardness) of interviewing the godlike Mike Patton recently, and I kind of liked his description of his latest album, even though it didn't really make for good copy. Don't have the transcript to hand, but it was along the lines of "It's the thing I just did, and obviously I really like it, or I wouldn't have done it. Hopefully some other people will, which would be nice, but I have no idea whether they will or not".
