Just popped here to flag up that my Wharfedale LP/HDMI is stuttering/freezing sporadically and frequently since v13.0 That's what it was like when I got it (refurb) but it had recovered to perfection before the OAD.

I cannot watch the recording of the Football League Show, it's very glitchy and if I use 2-minute skip I'm stuck with a shaking freeze-frame and have to hard reboot. (I can't possibly sit thru it all without skipping )

For those interested, I've made the 10 different builds of the v13.0 software available for download at http://www.vestelpvr.futaura.co.uk/T825.php - pclare kindly saved all these from the OADs, and after some testing they are now working via RS232 too (a tiny bit of reverse engineering on my part found that the files required a minor header modification to allow this).

Am very grateful for the Hitachi one, Futaura - do I need to install it prior to (rather than "just in time for") DSO? Because my Hitachi is working reasonably well, and of course it still has the detailed programme info available which the v13.0 Wharfedale version does not, so I'd like to keep it un-upgraded as long as poss.

(And, the Wharfedale is much more glitchy since v13.0 )

I know you know it already, but I do appreciate all your Vestel work on our behalf.

I was going to download the Wharfedale LP160DTRHDMI & LP250DTRHDMI version but was suprised to find it called t825_hdmi_noci_browser_lpm_novhf_vD0_serial_wharfedale.bin. I was expecting t825_hdmi_ci_browser_lpm_novhf_vD0 i.e. with CI instead of NOCI.
Is that the right file/name for the LP160DTRHDMI & LP250DTRHDMI?

It's the right file but the wrong name . I've corrected the filename. I must admit there was a certain amount of guesswork in recreating the filenames to match Vestel's usual format mainly in terms of which models have USB and/or the CI slot. AFAIK, this model is the only one to have USB purely from the size of the file which is much larger than all the others. My only real worry is the difference between the Sharp TU-R252H and TU-R162H which I can't find much details on - I didn't realize there was more of a difference than the HDD size, but the file sizes clearly indicate there is.

Thanks for the heads up - I missed that. At last sense has prevailed. However, do we expect Rovi/Gemstar are ready to give up on this yet? It seems they have yet to comment - not sure if they have any avenues left to pursue.

Any funtionality changes in Vesel updates have nothing to do with Gemstar.

As I've repeatedly pointed out, any epg patent issues would effect ALL Freeview receivers - not just Vestel - including non-recording ones.

My Vesel was stuttering on mux d for ages, then briefly mux 2, then mux 1 for a week, then back to mux d.

No stuttering at the moment, so i'm recording Batman and film4 while I can ........

It's quite obvious that the stuttering is a function of garbage in the mpeg2 info stream, as previously discussed ......

How do you know that?
It may simply be that Vestel chose to change the functionality to avoid the possibility of litigation. Other manufacturers may have just been less cautious. Did you get any support for your opinions?

It's Futaura who keeps claiming that Vestel have a particular problem with Gemstar rights. I don;t know why.

If there were an issue, it would affect ALL Freeview receivers with an epg. PVR or not. Which obviously isn't happening.

As far as I can see, the Gemstar patents describe a particular combination of data delivery and grid usage. Freeview appear to have pre-empted problems by scattering epg data around in the mpeg2 info fields. What happened with Freesat, I don't know, it seems to have a dedicated transponder, but maybe by that time they were fairly sure Gemstar wouldn't sue?

The VIrgin problems seem to be because Gemstar had already successfully repeatedly sued in USA, on epg systems essentially the same, but a UK judge ruled for VIrgin on what seems a bizarre technicality, eg, the definition of a "device"!

The stuttering itself is from a bizarre combo of Vestel power supply inadequacy, and wierd unnannounced stuff in mpeg2 data (possible new functions being tested?). On Futuara's website, various options were tried, and running the hard disk from a separate PC power supply seems to always cure it! Otherwise, the single wire move mod sometimes works, as does larger resevoir caps, and a few people have added voltage regulators ......

You don't know why I keep claiming this, or you don't know why Vestel have a problem with Gemstar? I didn't just make this up you know . Why were TopUp TV forced to modify their software and remove favourites? Clearly there were real legal reasons behind the removal of these features, which I'm not privvy too - who knows, maybe Vestel were contacted by Gemstar's legal team.

If you take a closer look through their patents, IIRC, one of them quite clearly mentions overlaying the display of programme information on video and also displaying a personalised EPG grid - hence why the newer software shows all channels in the EPG with favourites active, unlike the older software which showed only the channels in the active favourites list.

You may have "repeatedly pointed this out" but that does not make it true. It is more likely IMO that some manufacturers are being more cautious than others. Otherwise why would some manufacturers choose to modify their software and others not do so?

Obviously, I agree with you Colin . Also, there are some manufacturers who have obtained a licence from Gemstar (as sometimes mentioned in the small print in the manuals). I also have to wonder at the completely useless favourites function on my newish Sony TV, which could be Gemstar related or maybe just lame design (basically, the favourites have no affect on the EPG or any other TV function, such as the P+/- buttons, and only affects a pretty useless separate channel list which is inconvenient to use).

Of course it was due to patent concerns. Why would programme info cause stuttering? That would be a Vestel bug in any case, which should be fixed instead of removing useful features. That's like beheading someone to cure their ugliness. Also, the changes to how favourites work proves it was fear over the Gemstar nonsense. No idea why Vestel was so worried, there's so much prior art with Gemstar's crappy patents and they're not even particulary clever. Plus the fact that software patents are always harder to enforce in the UK.
