Out of the Blue: A great soap!

Out of the blue
Brought in as Neighbours replacement. Am I the only one in thinking that this was a great soap. I loved it but because it was messed around by the BBC, I could never find it.

It was awesome, it went into the OTT storylines in a way I think H&A take to far and Neighbours doesn't do enough if that makes sense.

I loved the twists and turns and genuinely thought it was a great show which improved over the season and the characters really worked well.

I'd bloody love it if Deborah McManus rocked up in Ramsay Street, there's quite a few characters from the show I'd actually like to just move to Neighbours, as the characters, not just the actors. Bec and Kirsten for example, although I know Kirsten is in H&A now so it's unlikely.

What was your favourite storyline/Character?

I can't decide on a favourite Storyline, but I think despite her being my least favourite by a mile when the show started, Bec grew to be my favourite. But I Loved Deborah, Pia, Kirsten, Peta and Paul (I'm not sure if that's his name, Jarrod and Addo's little brother) oh and I liked Tracey too and her little daughter was quite good for a child actress.

I loved this show. I always thought of it as a mix between Sons and Daughters and Breakers (two of my favourite Aussie soaps). BBC messed it around way too much and then when I held out some hope that an Aussie network would save it, Channel 10 in Australia made a similar mess by scheduling it at something like 10.30pm when no one watched. They should have put it on at 6pm before Neighbours instead of the endless Simpsons repeats they show.

I loved Out of the Blue and was gutted when it was axed. It had likable characters and interesting storylines. My fav couple were Peta and Poppy, those two were adorable and I'm glad I got to see them married before it ended at least.

I really wish the BBC had given it more of a chance. They moved it too quickly too BBC 2 which put people off watching it even more.

Ooh, also who do we think Sam shot at the end?

There were 3 bullets I think?

I reckon he went for Jarrod who would die, leaving Bec pregnant with his baby, Tracey alone, Ron losing a son, Addo and Paul losing a brother and the little girl having no father figure in her life at all.

Stavva also shot, but not dying, perhaps a coma for a while. Pia overcome with grief as she doesn't think he's ever going to wake up, seeking comfort in Ron, oldies affair (I always thought it was coming but it never did!)

Daniel McManus would receive the final shot, also not dying. Perhaps leading to him changing his ways for a while, but ultimately becoming bad again. Perhaps feeling saved for a while and becoming more christian like his brother was?

Instead of Daniel though, I like the idea of the guy who was thought to be after Peta to burst in after the second shot and Sam to have spun and shot him instantly, putting an end to that storyline and letting Peta and Poppy have a happy start to their marriage.

I liked the show but the BBC gave it a few weeks but ratings just kept dropping despite a brilliant lead-in From Doctors.

The first episode pulled in 1.3m ish and then the 2nd episode dipped a kept falling whiile on BBC1 ending up with around 700,000 so they had no choice but to move it to BBC2 seeing as reapts like murder she wrote thats been shown a million times still managed to rate well

oooh I totally loved OOTB. I wasn't sure of it for the first few eps but by the end of the first week I was hooked and it was always the first thing I watched on my sky+ when i got home from work. I even watched it again when five showed it. It's such a same it wasn't well received. Even five started moving it about in the schedules towards the end of the series.

It's so frustrating to know we will never know who sam shot (or if someone shot him!) and that the gorgeous stavva is no longer on our screens. Yeah it was a bit far-fetched at times but it was exciting and you just never knew what was going to happen next.

Just suddenly remembered about this and searched it to see whether there had been any revival of it, shame there has'nt as i loved it, it had some good characters in it as well. They need some channel to pick it up and bring it back. I miss it.

Looking back do people still feel fondly about this soap? I always wondered whether I should have watched it.

A lot of the episodes are available to watch online if you're curious. I think the main attraction for me was that it wasn't about teenagers. There were some teenagers but the bulk of the action was about friends in their 20's / 30's, much like another favourite of mine The Secret Life of Us.

I have been wanting to check this out too. Around the time it originally aired, i went through a phase where i didn't watch a lot of television so it never interested at that time. Sadly, i can only find the first 60/70 episodes and 130 were made in total. If i can ever find it in it's entirely, i will happily check it out.

Was it similar to Neighbours or Home and Away, or was it extremely different?

I'm not sure what they're like these days but I would've considered Neighbours and H&A to be teen soaps at the time whereas OOTB was an adult soap about people in their 30's with careers and families. There was a crime angle too so it was much edgier than the other two although H&A would go down the same crime route later. To look at, it's probably most similar to H&A in that it featured good looking people living in a Sydney beach community.
