Posted the news on the Lauren thread earlier but thought i would make a thread for all to see.

Lauren had been cast as Sandy in Greese and starts rehearsing in 10 days, and yes she will be wearing a wig

does that mean Jessica will be cast as the Lion in WoZ?

Congratulations to Lauren - I knew she would be snapped up quickly

Congratulations to Lauren, so strange that some of the other girls end up west end stars before the winner because of the time delay between end of series and the start of the show!

Very odd because the problems some girls were meant to have magically vanish quickly and given the length of time before the show most of any real problem identified could be disposed of for anyone by the time it starts.

Wizard may be a bit like Love Never Dies though. Niamh (and Jessie) were involved in developing LND (Niamh for a very long time) before the show and it may be Wizard has to be developed first too with new songs etc.

I think all the top six of IDA were involved in developing Love Never Dies and it could be the same for The Wizard of Oz.

That is a real coup for Lauren, well done to her.

I do wonder about these West End casting directors though. There must be loads of equally talented girls who audition for West End parts again and again and yet just because you get so much exposure on ALW shows you seem to get preferential treatment.

It's not preferential treatment so much as astute business sense. Because she's been on the show Lauren will get bums on seats in a way that an unknown couldn't hope to. It just shows what the programme can do for a career - prior to SOTR there is no way Lauren would have been seen for Sandy. (Or even if she had a pushy agent and was seen, there is no way she could hope to get the part).

For those already in the business, winning the show is completely immaterial. Careers are transformed by getting to the live shows. Look at Daniel Boys and Rachel Tucker - both extremely talented, but were very far from establishing themselves as stars. Post show they were offered parts that would never have come their way if they hadn't had the exposure.

There is no way that they get preferential treatment. Lauren had got down to the last two for a part in another musical but they decided she wasn't right for the role, she looked too young apparently (which made me laugh when I heard that)!!!

For Christine? She would be great in that part, but at least she will have another opportunity if they thought she was too young. From her performances in OTR I thought Lauren could play anything between about 16 and 30 - she does mature and sophisticated pretty well!

Been keeping an eye on Lauren's thread.

It was inevitable that she would get a west end leading role quite soon.
She has all round ability,is a polished professional performer and of course she has that amazing vocal talent.

Well done Lauren.A leading lady before the winner of OTR.
Not a jibe,just ironic.
Good luck to all the girls.I hope thay all do well.
Shows like OTR are a proving ground. It shows that you can work hard in a short time span, get up to speed with the routines and most of all perform to a very high standard under pressure.Leaving aside who was most suited to the role of Dorothy (which was the fresh, charmingly enigmatic Danielle) Lauren I think more than anyone showed that overall she was the finished product.

I agree totally. I don't know how long Lauren's contract is for, but if it is 6 months then she could be in her second leading role before OTR starts - which would be doubly ironic! And nothing at all against Danielle (who is perfect for Dorothy IMO) but I wonder, had Lauren won it, whether with her greater experience she would be getting a tiny bit bored with the long lead-in.

I think it helps get them in to the running but many of the girls ended up in roles they had some particular quality for and in those niches they seem very good candidates anyway. There doesn't seem to be many people who can play Roxie around or they would have a lot more new Roxies instead of tried and trusted ones - they seem to find it easier to find new UK Velmas. Rachel did a belting role and the spoof of Wicked after IDA and clearly was made to play the role she now has. You can look at Siobhan and Sam and see why they would get Grease or Eponine (in both cases you want someone with a distinctive strong vocal in the right age bracket) Niamh as Fleck makes perfect visual and vocal sense. There's been some imaginative casting that has worked well too - Siobhan as Sally and Jessie as Anne are not obvious. Lauren doesn't look that obvious for Sandy's character to me but I suspect she will do a Siobhan and become it too and she's going to nail the vocal which is why I would go and see Grease anyway.

The problem area is when they start casting people for roles they can't act to get the name (and there may be more casting to sing rather than act going on too) I would be very annoyed if I had spent 3- 4 years training and ended up watching someone from TV take the roles I could sing and act better. There's a couple of shows now I would love to see but am avoiding because they have cast a popular name who I would pay to avoid. Thats only one bit of the problem though as some people seem to get some jobs anyway regardless of whether there's other people who could play it better from ALW shows or anywhere else.

It all seems a rather random business - in one sense it would be better if they auditioned lots of possibles with a level playing field. In another I think they would do better than they do if they knew and understood and deployed a few known people better . It seems today there may be a closing the show vacancy for Nancy in Oliver - should it go to someone who survives an audition process, a big name or someone we saw on the ALW show who from what we saw will do it about as well as it can be done? I can think of two straight off .

She also got offered Maria in the UK tour of Sound of Music!

You know what's weird, I was wondering the other day how Lauren would have done had OTR been the Maria show (as in, if they'd done Dorothy two years ago and Maria now or if Lauren had been two years older and so at the same age and level of training as she is now and able to able that series instead). At that stage no one seemed to have a problem with training and she'd have been a similar age to the other main contenders. This just confirms my suspicions!

Sounds like Lauren's going to have plenty of options after Grease is over though! On a selfish note, I'm glad she's doing that as it means I can go and see her in London. Also I think it makes sense for her to do Grease first as Sandy is the youngest of those roles so she can have a fun stint in Grease and then will still have the option of doing the other roles when she's a little older. It also serves as an interesting addendum to our debate on here about whether training helps or hinders these girls after the series. In the cases of Siobhan and Lauren, training very clearly helps, seeing as Siobhan took two years after the series ended to get enough experience to land Sandy whereas Lauren can go straight into it.

That I can see. Christine though is the most difficult soprano role around and Lauren's CV has her as a Mezzo - can't see that. Gina Beck is leaving in September though from her twitter. Connie is meant to be off too.

I'm not seeing how that's possible, unless they are extending it beyond Oxford in December/early January, because I know that Connie is signed on until then, except for Plymouth and Bournemouth (late August through early October) because she's taking time off to get married:

Or was Lauren offered the alternate part? I'm not 100% positive Kirsty Malpass (the current alternate) is signed on for the duration of the tour, but I'm fairly sure that she is.

Well done Lauren! Very good news. Though not a big fan of her on OTR she's immensely talented and I feel was just not right for Dorothy.

I wish her the best of luck in Grease
