First Charge
Bald1

Am looking at buying a new phone in the next few days and wanted to find out how long you should leave a phone on charge for when you first get it.

Its been a long time since I had a phone from new as I have had a number of hand me downs. I know that years ago the first charge was about 24 hours. I have been told by someone who works in a certain phone shop that you should totally run the battery down then charge it for 10-12 hours................is this correct? The phone I am looking at getting is a Samsung s3550

These days it really doesn't matter. People in phone shops tell you all sorts of rubbish! Most phone batteries will go from flat to full in about 3 to 5 hours at most, though some high capacity batteries on low-amp charge (i.e. through USB) could take longer.

Stick it on charge until it says it's full and it will be fine. You might find it takes a couple of recharge cycles before you get the best out of the battery, but don't worry about memory effect and all that - lithium ion cells have no memory effect. If anything, it's better to not let the battery drain completely all the time if you can to help retain cell capacity.

Also, don't worry about overcharging as the battery will automatically stop charging once it is fully charged.

So yeah, you can leave it for 24 hours if you want, but it won't make any difference!

Rather than listening to somebody in a phone shop just look at the instructions that come with the phone - as they're written by the manufacturer they're more likely to be accurate. Follow those. Easy, really.
