external hdd not powering up

Hi.

Will keep this as short as possible.

I am having a problem with the hdr and an external hdd.

The external hdd is a 500gb usb powered which i have formatted to ext3.

My problem is that when i turn on the hdr the external hdd powers up for only a few seconds while the hdr is booting and powers down before the hdr has turned "on"

But if i connect it to the hdr while the hdr is on. it powers up and the hdr recognises it.

I want to leave it connected to the rear usb permanently and not have to keep disconnecting and reconnecting it each time i want to use it.

I have tried the front usb port as well but same thing.

So is it the humax or the external drive?

Regards

I have an external 1TB drive that the hdr controls the power to using a relay switched by the12V power rail in the hdr. That works fine with no problem, the hdr boots with the drive available. Does the drive have built in power saving, if so it might be possible to disable this (check the drive makers website)

Hi, Do you have the drive drawing its power from the USB bus or is it powered from the mains ? If powered from the Foxsat maybe it can't supply sufficient power for the drive.

The thing is that when i connect the external hdd to the hdr when the is on,it is recognised and works fine.

But when you turn on the hdr with the external hdd already connected the external hdd powers up for about 5 seconds and then shuts down while the hdr is booting

Cannot find any info about power saving in the manual.
Its a medion 500gb usb powered drive

Very puzzled

What happens if you enter "media" after your HDR has fully woken up? One of my powered 1Tb drives behaves in a similar fashion to yours. It has power saving as standard. On booting up the HDR the blue LED in the drive energises for about 20 seconds and then it shuts down. If I enter "media" then the HDR appears to hang and I get a black screen for about five seconds while the external drive spins up. Then all is normal and sda1 is displayed in the media panel. Normally I do not leave the power to any of my drives connected unless I forget, so it is only on the odd occasion I forget that this happens.

Have you tried using both ports to power the drive. It might be that the power supply can't support the current drain during the boot procedure.

Just to update.

Drive still the same even when connected to the two usb ports.

Have contacted medion support

They are to get back to me but say that the hard drive is powering down because it cannot identify a host within the first 5-10 secs.

Looks like the drive is going back to the shop

Must also say that i had the same hdd drive connected to a mpeg 4 set top box for my terrestial viewing and i have had no problems even though that box also takes 30 seconds to power up.

I have a external caddy with the orgional HDR disk inside -connected via USB. I tried putting the HDR in power saving mode and then turning it on so it rebooted. All was fine - the USD hard drive was seen by the HDR (but no message that a USB device was connected).
