Yes i miss it too. Damn ITV for taking it off and not giving it a chance! Its not like they have replaced it with anything better! They should have just kept Crossroads on and kept NightAnDay as a one day a week late night soap!

I think they should hae given the 2001 version of Crossroads more of a chance. With a bit of character tweaking here and there I believe it could still be going today. The 2003 version with Jane Asher was just too over the top. I know what Yvon Grace was trying to achieve but it clearly didnt work. As for ITV you cant blame a commercial concern for taking off a programme that at times had little more than a million viewers.

The 2001 version could well have worked up to something good with a bit of work. I was one of many people who watched that version religiously then switched off when Jane Asher arrived.

The 2001 version had plenty of potential, they had the "business problems" plot working it's way out, along with the murder of Bryan, along with Ray's deportation problems etc, etc, etc.

Sigh, if only people had the imagination for it....

Let's not forget Emmerdale began as a daytime soap and is now one of the big three!

It's sad that Crossroads is gone, especially considering that this year is the 40th Anniversary of it first starting.

ITV's biggest mistake was taking so long to recommision it in 2002, the 4 month break managed to shake off most of it's viewers and then Yvon Grace alienated most of the remaining viewers with all her changes.

Still I believe Emmerdale is the closest thing on TV to Crossroads and had Crossroads not ended in 1988 it would be quite a similar show.

True........but i think the yvone grace version was actually a lot better!

By the way; the new ITV controller had allready decided to axe crossroads even before the yg version started! So even as it was going on air, the controller had allready made up his mind to gid rid of it.

ITV are looking for somthing like DOCTORS to replace it.

crossroads is an idea whose time has passed.people on the whole can't accept soaps like that,i quite liked it myself overall but yvonne grace's attempt to camp it up was a mistake in 2003.corrie and emmerdale have moved with the times in response to EE.

Thats not strictly true. He was no fan of Crossroads BUT he pointed out at the time of his appointment that if it was performing well it would stay, truth is after 5 months of Yvon Grace's version it was doing worse than the previous 2001/2002 version. I think the fact is Crossroads is dead and shouldnt have really returned. ITV should leave daytime soaps alone now.

Dont be stupid, just because one soap failed does not mean they all will. Using your logic every gerne of prog would be axed!

Like all other shows that fail; all you do is make a new one! It to may fail, but in tv, you just keep going till you find one that works!

That's not true considering that Nigel Pickard didn't start in the job until March 2003.

What???????? For a start 2 daytime soaps failed but never mind. I just dont see the point or the need for any more soaps. There are far to many as it is and I think we are in soap overload. If ITV try a doctors style soap then they should take a leaf out of the Beebs book and NOT let it run 52 weeks a year, and give it breaks at xmas, the spring, summer etc.

There obv arent enough soaps around for you, which is fine, but if your expecting an Yvon Grace style soap I wouldnt hold your breath, it failed and ITV wont try and re-create another in a similar vain. A new soap for that timeslot will have to be different if it's going to stand any chance of working at all.

Its ok to say something new is needed but isnt that what Yvon Grace tried to do?
At the end of the day Crossroads could have been a winner had ITV not dropped it for Sport,Christmas and then a 4 month break to decide whether or not to recommission.
ITV actually failed not the series.

Yvon Grace failed. Had ITV stuck to their guns and given the 2001 version a chance to grow then it could still be on our screens now. I liked the 2001/2002 version with the Booths and just thought it was picking up (after a slow start) when it went off air in August 2002.

When it returned in Jan 2003 I was horrified at what it had become under Yvon Grace. Awful characters that you couldnt warm to, hammy over the top acting and terrible non stories. Jane Asher looked bored (but I admit did her best), Jane Gurnett probably wishes she hadnt agreed to come back and as for Anne Charlston

ITV dis fail Crossroads but way back in 1988 when they first axed it, they could have done something to save it then.

I guess you mean NIGHT & DAY?

Well I never saw that one; so I cant coment. I agree that ITV will not try and make a OTT style soap again , so it looks like it will be more in line with DOCTORS as those type of dramas work well with the female veiwer!

I wont be watching it tho, cos I cant stand DOCTORS or HOLBY CITY.
Sadly the kind of soap I want will probs never be made by a British channel ----you know the kind, OTT storylines, flashbacks, flash-forwards and fantasy scene's

as was mentioned a little earlier this November will indeed be the 40th anniv of the start of Crossroads, i don't suppose ITV will mark this at all which is a shame, but could there be a DVD of some sort? how much of the prog still exists, i assume much of the earlier stuff has been wiped? and whenever clips are shown they always seem to be the same ones, do any older episode exist? maybe some engineers have them stashed in a garage ala Dr.Who, or perhaps some foreign channels have kept tapes, i believe it was shown in Australia?, so many programmes are now on DVD it would be nice to get a Crossroads DVD together, there are enough cast members around to do an feature as an extra, i know a number of fans have episodes, perhaps these could be sourced by the makers, or is it a case of it's gone, it was an embarresment, lets just forget it?
Come on fans lets do something November 2 is only 5 months away, any ideas?
"Crossroad Motel, can I help you?"

I've already started a campaign to try and persuade Carlton Visual to release a DVD. Sign it here:

Isn't Hollyoaks a bit like that? I know Brookside was getting like that toward the end as well.

Night & Day was pretty surreal, I didn't start to watch until near the end though so missed many of the highlights.

I loved the old Crossroads and when I heard that it was coming back had my doubt but thought the 2nd version was fab The Russell Family were good Jill and Adam were good too. But it all went tits up which was sad ITV could have had such a good thing. They tried to appeal to Kids with the 17.05 slot. But should have had a later slot, Moving the National News to 17.30 and Crossroads at 1800. But ITV have no idea. It would have worked at 1800. or even 18.30. with a daytime repeat.
The 3rd version was good too but it was like Dynasty you had to be gay to understand it.
I believe there is a place for Crossroads on TV now it just needs a TV company with the balls to bring it back and making with with the loving care the last 2 verisons were made.

Sadly, Crossroads won't return. It's like a cursed ship now. It would be like rebuilding the Titanic!

I don't think ITV will take the risk of introducing a brand new soap to daytime, more likely will be spin-offs from the bog soaps, like the 'Weatherfield general' medical soap which was mooted a few months back.
These will guarantee a curious audience at the start, and reguklar guest stars from the show would help boost it too. ITV are getting very lazy in this respect now and franchise TV is only going to get more common. Heartbeat / The Royal being an obvious example.

I wonder is ITV3 will show Crossroads.
As for a daytime soap I worry about these spin offs Heartbeat. The Royal and Casulaty/Holby have paied off, but look at The Bill spin offs EastEnders - Frank Butcher, they havent worked. Doctors was lucky it worked. ITV should think up something new and fresh.

Had an Idea for a daytime soap while on the toilet . A farm near a motel near a small street behind a square, with a hospital were all the residents work
I'd call it EmmerCrossCorrieEnderCasulty City.
