Computer won't recognise iPod/can't install software after iOS4 upgrade

Basically it took me ages to load up iOS4 on my computer. When it did eventually complete the installation it restored my iPod in preparation for loading the new software onto it. Then all of a sudden I get a message from Windows saying that I need to install the device driver software. It managed to install part of it but it couldn't install "Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode)". It just kept saying to insert the disk that came with it though of course I didn't get one. Now my iPod is stuck on the original screen when I bought it with the image of the USB cable and iTunes logo. I keep unplugging it and restarting my computer but it's not being recognised by the computer at all.

I've tried troubleshooting this on Apple's website but I haven't been able to access it for several days now, no matter which browser I try (though I was able to through my iPod!).

It's a 2nd generation iPod Touch, Windows Vista and yes it is the latest version of iTunes.

All help appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi, with your iPod plugged in, load iTunes and when it says your iPod is in recovery mode and needs to restore, hold the shift button and click 'Restore'.. now locate the iOS4 firmware file and press OK. it should now restore your ipod with the latest firmware.

Note that this will wipe everything from your iPod.

This happened to me once, I had to update my iPod software on another computer and then restore it on the computer I use it with.

iTunes can't recognise the iPod at all due to these device driver problems I've got with the computer so I don't think I can do any of this.

The iPod has already wiped due to that restore from before.

Have you tried doing a System Restore on your computer to a few days back? It should re-install the driver and will not delete any files including the new firmware.

I haven't tried that, do you think you could guide me through it please?!

Actually it's ok, I've found the System Restore window. I'll let you know on the other side!

I've done two system restores now and it still isn't working: the driver device installation thing keeps on coming up and there doesn't appear to be any way around it. What a nightmare.

Actually, as I typed that a message came up saying the system restore was unsuccessful and nothing was changed! Oh my god this is absurd!

I went for this in the end and it's now working fine! Thanks!
