Headphone issues

I have been going through a lot of pairs of headphones over the years, and I can't figure out why. It is always the same problem, over a couple of different ranges of products.

Years ago, I used to have some standard JVC gummy headphones that sat in the ear (not in-ear/ear canal). I also had similar from the likes of Sony and what not. When they broke, it was always the left earphone that stopped working.

Over the past 3 years or so, I've been using Sennheiser CX300 II (x5 or more), also CX400 (x1) and CX500 (x2). They are great headphones, and only cost some £20 from Amazon, but I don't want to have to keep buying new headphones every 4/5/6 months. With these, like the older ones, it is always the left headphone that breaks. Either the connection in the left headphone itself becomes loose, or the jack becomes loose, losing sound in the left piece.

I use them a lot. Sometimes wearing them (and in use) during an active job for 10 hours a day (1 day a week). I also use them for watching TV when my girl friend doesn't want to hear it or is doing work. I also use them while on the PC while she has music on or what not. I also use them while travelling via public transport. I use them every day, for hours on end most of the time.

However, I don't tug on the headphones, and when I wear them, I have them concealed under my T-Shirt (from the pocket of my jeans, under the T-Shirt, out the top and into my ears). I don't catch them on things due to wearing them like this also, because they're concealed.

I don't want to go for a more expensive pair of headphones, simply in case it keeps happening to them.

Is it something I am doing wrong, or simply due to my excessive use? Like I said earlier in this post, I don't want to have to keep forking out, because it all adds up. Especially if you're someone like me, and doesn't have a great deal of money.

You buy the real? or the knockoffs. fakeheadphone site has some tips on figuring it out. 1 or 2 sets are easy to go through in a year, i'm surprised you wen through 5 sets of mk2 cx300 alone. I find that they wear out after a year or so of heavy use regardless of brand, its just the breaks. Constant movement of the thin wires eventually breaks a connection at some point on one end.

These are the ones I usually buy. £16, from one of Amazon's preferred merchants (Indigostarfish), which others and I have bought other things from and had no problems. 307 reviews and an average of 4 of 5 stars.

Maybe it is simply due to excessive use. 2-3 pairs a year is what I usually go through. Sucks.

I have the same problem.

The left side always breaking especially where the ear phone joins the head band.

Personally I think they are made to break but it is a weak point in the design.

The other way I break headphones is by standing on the wire and breaking it.

I brought some Goldwing headphones that had detachable wires but the head band broke instead. So annoying.

I'm glad it's not just me who goes through earphones at an alarming rate. I usually tend to go with the £20 skullcandy sets for comfort and noise cancelling but have gone through 3 sets in the past 18 months. I bought my current ones in January and already the sound is starting to slightly distort in one ear.

I always thought wrapping the cable around my iPod would harm them and have stopped doing this. Hasn't made any difference though.
