I updated my 8GB one tonight. No multi tasking or backgrounds in the menus but new features I see so far are:

*Popular searches in the browser and spelling errors.
*3D looking menu at the bottom now.
*Airplane mode.
*Folders for your apps.
*Browser speed is much quicker.

Apart from that seems most is saved for the new Iphone 4.

Is that " " Steve Jobs sticking out his tongue at you? Well, let's say it's good it was for free. I wouldn't have bothered otherwise, as multitasking is disabled for my itouch 2g and there's nothing else worth paying for in it.

I got mine last night - i'm glad it was free. If i'd have paid for it i'd have been a bit disappointed. It's a shame the 2nd gen don't get the wallpapers. Is there a reason for this??

I do love the fact they have sorted the albums out though. Removing the artist name from under the album title has really cleared it up. I like the iTunes effect too with the album length, year and total track #. Does anybody else find the album art really blurry though when clicking on an album??

I have a 3rd generation but only 8GB don't have the wallpapers on the menu backgrounds either. I think only the bigger memory ones got updated.

Not much of an update but the Iphone 4 will be worth upgrading to.

I'm a bit disgruntled I didn't get wallpapers, either, but I like being able to use folders. It's nice not to have to flip through a gazillion screens now.

Took forever to install, though

Folders are the only feature which may tempt me to upgrade my 2nd gen 8GB iTouch, but from a review of how they work, I'm not convinced they'll be any quicker than my current well organised layout where all regularly used apps on one of four pages (or at the bottom of the screen), and I know exactly which page they are on.

That's not to say I won't upgrade eventually, but probably not until 4.0.1, unless some must have app cannot be made to run on 3.1.2.

Well, airplane mode is something for iphones anyway, on itouch you go to settings and turn wifi off and you did the same without a new functionality with a fancy icon.

Chuffin' Nora - how long does this update take? I've been at it for three hours and it's only just started restoring Music and Vids....

My 3rd gen Ipod touch got all the above plus the ability to change the homescreen background and install third party apps. Acording to many places online there are over 100 new features on the iphone and 50 for Ipod touch 3rd generation can anyone confirm this. If this is the case there well hidden.

The update took about 20 mins but it then started to sync my Ipod not once but twice which seemed to take forever. The only real problem I have had is with some apps but many will need updated to work with the new software.

One more thing my Ipod now recognizes me living in Scotland and not Springfield Ohio.

I've got the 2nd gen (16GB) ipod touch and I'm not getting the wallpaper. I'm almost certain that only the 3rd gen (late 2009) model gets the wallpapers and multi-tasking. I also believe that the 8GB late 2009 touch is actually 2nd gen too, only the 32 and 64GB models are 3rd gen.

I'm not too disappointed about that, I don't think I'll be using it much when I get the iphone 4 next month. Battery life really seems to be sufferering since I put ios4 on.

I'd assume it turns off Bluetooth on the relevant iPod touch models as well.

I stand corrected it is the home screen picture I can change. Sorry I thought this was wall paper as it is lited as wall paper in settings.

Where is this wallpaper setting supposed to be? I have one in general settings, but it's really just the picture you see when you are unlocking the device. Really looks like itouch 2g owners are not worth it. Yeah, that really makes me rush to buy another one

I have a 64 gig iPod Touch and since the upgrade to the new software, my batterly life has become awful.

Listemning to 2/3 albums worth of music (30 songs) and the battery is in the red zone.

Coincidence? It was never like this before iOS4.

Same here, but there are the new features enabled for 3g, not available for 2g which might cause the problems.

After installing iOS4 on my 2nd Gen 16Gb iPod Touch, I find that it drains it's battery overnight.

At first, I thought it was the wife + Angry Birds , but after a full charge... it did it again.

It's discussed on the Apple boards here.

It does seem to be related to always-on wifi required for push notifications - the quick and dirty way to disable that is to enable Airplane mode in Settings. Not ideal.

I've just done that today, so will report back later to see if doing that has any effect.

The Apple programmers are really getting lazy I can see 4.1 in the near future, unless Jobs sells it as a new feature.

My third gen Ipod has a better battery life. Probably due to increased speeds, folders so I don't have to browse as much.

Perhaps the battery issue is with 2nd gen Ipods?

Nope because as I pointed out, mine is a 64 gig, which makes it 3rd gen and the battery is knacked.

It's the persistent wi-fi that's causing the battery problems.

Under iOS4, be default, wi-fi remains 'on' when your ipod goes in to sleep mode. To counter this, go into Settings, then check for any apps that have push notifications (Facebook, for example). Turn 'em off. That includes Mail, too.

I've turned off all notifications in all the apps that have it, set Mail to fetch manually, but left the wi-fi on, and the battery has been fine for the last few days - back to normal I'd say.
