What a stupid programme with daft animal characters and has been guests. I like it and hopefully we'll get a new series before long

Just had a thought.

How long will it be before some idiot accuses the BBC of being 'PC' by including an Afghan hound and Persian cat.

I thing they've taken most of the Mongrels episodes off iPlayer now - every episode was up a week ago.

Yep, series linked, so they all went off 7 days after the last episode...

As it's BBC3 then presumably it'll be repeated very frequently - the new Two Pints or Gavin and Stacey

I'm liking the extras.

The pilot episode with the characters not quite how we know them.

The original pitch to the Beeb with Nelson definitely not how we know him

Some entertaining commentaries, and deleted scenes from the Springwatch ep (Which also has the old 'We are Mongrels' title card, and the wrong end roller) The commentaries aren't the best I've ever heard, but they were definitely interesting.

There's also the Mongrels uncovered doc as well. Plus an interview with the show''s creator.

All in all I think it's a pretty darned good set spread across two discs. Certainly more extras than you'd usually expect from a series.

Thanks for the info. I can feel an exercising of the plastic coming on. I've never bought a tv series on dvd before! I don't know if dvd sales will influence the decision on a second series, but it can't hurt.

Like SageDragon, I've been using the plastic tonight for some purchases, including the DVD of Mongrels. The odd thing is, I have looked in more than one shop over the past week and have yet to see the thing on display anywhere. Tesco's, Asda, HMV....all Mongrel-less.

Settle for the ring tone.

"O! Answer the ******* phone you stupid ****!"

Or a Destiny one:

"What, the phone? For moi? Ooooooo!"

How about The Mongrels for the Ch4 alternative Christmas Message?

Hurrah ! Or as Vince would say...

Interesting that 150k is enough viewers to be classed as a "massive success"!!!

This isn't too bad. It ain't the best show BBC have given us, but I still watch it! It's a nice little pick me up.

Well, bit difficult to say. The average share is about 1.5% which equates to 375k (I think - it depends on whether that's over a 24h period or not, so it's confusing). The "top" shows (EE, FG) regularly get around 1mil each week.

Possibly a little harse comparing it to EE and FG. FG is one of BBC Three's flagship programs. The big, popular US import and EE is one of the BBC's flagship programs and probably does get a decent viewing for people who prefer the schedule time.

Mongrels was a first run, unknown, niche comedy and it seems to have a decent base of fans. Not many of the other BBC Three alternative comedies get as much attention. I'm biased ofcourse

I think another criteria for a show getting re-commissioned is if the people at the BBC thought it was good enough to warrant a second series, like they did with Only Fools and Horses for the first few seires in the early 80s, when that got dismal ratings.

Also, am I the only one to decode the fact that this has a bonfire night episode as it's last one to mean a repeat run in late summer/autumn, probably on a mainstream BBC channel?

The series was 8 episodes in length, which means that if the final episode was repeated in the week in which bonfire night falls, then the first episode would be screened in late September, which is the time when TV schedules are relaunched with loads of new shows or new series of returning shows?

As to why they broadcast it on BBC Three at this time of year, maybe they had 8 slots to fill, and wanted to try out a new 8-part BBC comedy series for ratings before it gets its mainstream preimere on BBC2 rather than repeat Two Pints or Family Guy?
