We already know this isn't true - all the Nu Who companions (except for Donna) have flown the TARDIS.

From the Cybers/Daleks/Sontarans/etc point of view they may think that only the Doctor can fly the TARDIS as he's been the only constant to them - just like my 7 year old thinks I'm the only one who can drive our car as he's never seen anyone else but me drive it.

Just an idea.

Just disputing the 'River is the Doctor because only the Doctor can fly the TARDIS' argument...

But yeah - I think it could be more than that, inasmuch as something else is manipulating the Alliance to believe that only the Doctor can fly the TARDIS...

Donna was shown flying the Tardis under the instruction of the Doctor in series 4 The Sontaran Stratagem, I think.

Churchill said "You're not THE Doctor".

IMO River is just River. I don't get why she has to be more. She's interesting and intriguing enough already.

My father's opinion not withstanding Churchill is not infallible.

I agree though, with the point about River Song. I don't think she's a Time Lord, or any any other character.

Still, I'm not convinced that Octavion's assertion that the Doctor wouldn't help them if he knew what she *was* is entirely satisfied by the revelation that she killed a man.

I would have thought that unless she was really a particularly notorious murderer now going under a different identity, Octavion would have more acutely said 'what you *did*'

I thought everyone knew that River Song is actually a later reincarnation of Romana, who is the daughter of the Rani.... they all have R's at the beginning of their name - so it must be.

Although it's never been explicitly ruled out, the implication has been that regeneration doesn't involve a sex change.

The Doctor, the Master and Romana have always stayed the same sex when regenerating. Thats something like 15 or 16 times.

While I don't think that River is a timelord, it cannot be ruled out that a sex change during regeneration is feasible; after all, Eleven seem to have thought for a moment that he might be a girl after regeneration, so it seems to be at least a theoretical option.

But the Doctor has never purposefully met himself repeatedly through time and would know what order the regenerations come in, surely.

I still believe that Moffat does not know and has never known who she really is, that she's just a device to keep us guessing and keep things interesting. It will never be answered, I bet you.

And it never needs answering because she has obviously known him way way ahead of his current timeline, one we will never see even if we saw his current timeline for another 50 years! Just look at her spoiler book, Matt's Doctor is still near the beginning of it!

But all Time Lords can fly TARDISes. So clearly it isnt the case that only the Doctor can fly the TARDIS.

phew, first post after reading all these and waiting ages to get approved on the BB.

My theories keep changing, but I don't think River will turn out to be the doctor, a relative or so on its just too easy. I have a current theory which is based around who she killed. So there's only 3 people I think this could be, the first being the Doctor of course- but again too easy, the second Rory, but with the timelines that doesn't seem to add up yet- although granted she does hop about a bit, but I don't know why the military would be so up in arms about her killing him... but my favourite and most far fetched (but I really think it does add up) being...

Spoiler
Omega, especially given some people pointing out the patch she wore on her shoulder in TTOA ( http://www.malevolentia.com/riversong.png ). Somehow the military were affiliated with Omega as an engineer on a big project. She worked alongside him but ended up killing him/ turning him into antimatter when she realised he was a genius, but also a bit mad. Of course no one else knows her reasons for killing him and thus she ends up in the storm cage. This could lead to quite a good early introduction to River as a sort of enemy of the doctor and not an ally as she later becomes. Also explains that it would currently be Omega trying to come back through the cracks in the universe. Also adds up as to why the military were royally cheesed off when she killed whoever she killed.

hmmm, first post so be gentle, but if anyone can pick it apart then I'd be more than happy.

The Tardis is female. The Doctor talks to it like a wife or partner. (Thanks dear). When Churchill calls the Tardis, River gets the call.
River knows more about how the Tardis works than the Doctor (blue boringers)

River being the Tardis does kinda work. Ish.

cf "You, me, handcuffs. Must it always end like this?"

HOW does FaS River know to reference this?

Or is it supposed to be poignant foreshadowing?

I did have a theory that River was Donna, but the handcuffs line made me wonder if she's Amy?

Pond/River... could work.

I could imagine Amelia growing up to be River sooner than I can accept that that fearless, slightly haunted, inscrutable child growing up into a kissogram who has random flashes of intelligence when she's not squealing and being incredibly vapid...
No disrespect to Karen Gillan, but I despair of the way Amy's character is written. I'd assumed it was a blip on Moffat's part, but if Amy was a sort of 'fobwatched' River Song, her patchy characterisation could be explained away.

My opinion, is the live incarnation of the TARDIS.
Why?!?
Simple.
Wots the doctors longest running companion? When he nicked the Tardis@ very beginning a Tardis is only connectd 2 ONE Timelord, if he regenerates he HAS to b in Tardis coz connected.. Also a Tardis isn't built, its grown.
Rivers book is a Tardis. And in Big Bang, Amy pond shouldnt have remembered River but did 'cause the old new borrowed blue Tardis, hence shed remember River. The Doctor taught her to fly Tardis cause he's the pilot. She calls him sweet and can jump thru time easily, knowing were the Doctors bound to be.

I think River is Tardis.

Mind you, i bet if I'm wrong in Dr who in a few years they will use the idea

Have you seen the new pictures posted on the DW site, they are quite spoilery. But if you havent and dont want to be spoiled , dont read the below.

Spoiler
Two of the pictures show the doctor regenerating outside, so therefore not in the tardis

Either way, still could be River and the Tardis though
Also,
David Tenants been seen in clothes at the studios. So next Dr may be David Tenant coz Smith is out the end of the series.

See i thought (if the rule still applies) he would be the solution to there being only 13 doctors.
Because as soon as he left wasnt there something about him wanting to come back and the bbc wanting him back.
So i thought that maybe the dr some how degenerates back into david tennant.
But if a degeneration is possible i guess i could happen at any time and not nesercerily at the end of the 13th doctors life.

I've often wondered if River is a human version of the Tardis?

Also wondered too if the best man she knew she killed was the final version of The Doctor very early on in her time line before she knew sho he was. So just like No 10 met River at the end of her life, River met The Doctor at the end of his.

I don't buy this tardis could be a walking talking humanoid thing at all.

I know Melkur was a walking statue, but at the end of the day, the Master was piloting this.
