Yes the applications have to be rewritten but they are far more power efficient than similar apps on a standard multitasking device. Saving the applications state upon close us far better than having it eating up processes. I disagree that it looks like a nokia. The feeling of it is far more solid due to the use of glass and steel and it's far thinner than any nokia smartphone.

The iPhone 4G does look like a good phone, provided you are not right-handed and therefore tend not to hold it cupped in the palm of your left-hand because of Apple's ludicrous decision to put the mobile-phone antenna in the lower-left corner. Wrong-handed people will be fine, as will those who hold their phone in their left-hand abnormally, but the whole iPhone 4 launch has been a disaster.

They had record breaking pre-orders. None of those people knew about the issue.

I didn't know about the issue waiting outside of the O2 store all night Thursday either (2nd in line)

I'm not recommending the phone to anyone until Apple does something - be that an update or hardware swaps for those with the problem.

Only played with one _very_ briefly (I'm a iPhone 3G owner). Really didn't like the hard edges, felt comparatively awkward to hold. Of course, it's a cracking device that'll do well, but it's not enough to justify my (out of contract and very cheap to run!) iPhone 3G getting retired yet.

It is more power efficient, but its more like task switching - it isn't really multi tasking as you've got to know on desktops. Or for that matter as I've got used to it on Symbian. Interesting thing is that the iOS can support true multi tasking, but obviously its not an energy efficient multi tasking as it is on the competition (ie. Symbian or WM).

When I talk about the look, I mean the overall style - it is *very* reminiscent of the N81 or N96, but obviously updated/slimmer. It was the first thing I thought when i saw the "stolen" iPhone 4 on Gizmodo, and that still stands.

I get that they do multi-tasking different but what can an Android or Symbian phone do that iOS4 can't?

They may do multi-tasking different but it just feels like multi-tasking that you get on any device to me but done better.

At least in the case of Symbian, you can actively have applications running in the background if you want. Not sure if thats truly possible on iOS or Android. To be honest for most people that doesn't really matter.

Althought the girlfriends daughter seems to like passing the 5230 back to me with several games running in parallel .....

From the developers perspective it'll probably be irritating - having to re-write your application to support whatever "multitasking features" are applicable to your application could possibly require a fair bit of effort.

Compared to my iPhone 3G I have to say speed wise the iPhone 4 has a number of Improvements compared to the 3G such as faster Speed, Better Battery Life, Better Camera and the new functions improve the Functions of the existing OS the only gripe I've got with the phone at the moment though is the number of Bugs that are in ios4 that need to be fixed such as Email Settings forgetting your passwords and also so 3rd Party Apps need to be updated to make them a bit more stable.

Notifications are still a very poor way of doing things. On Android and Symbian an IM app can run in the background just like it would on a computer - using very little memory/CPU.

With iPhone, you must use push notifications to tell the user when there is a new message (including the awful notification bubble that takes focus away from whatever is on screen). If you choose to follow the notification back to the IM App, the app has to sign in to the IM service and download the messages that are waiting for you.
