Went through the procedure on O2's website to swap the SIM over to microsim and setup the new iPhone 4. However it still says 'Waiting for activation - this may take some time"

Anyone know how long this takes or are the servers overloaded today?

As it is launch day, it's quite likely the servers are overloaded and you'll just need to wait I'm afraid.

they said that i would get a text on my old phone to tell me that sim had stopped and the new one was ready and number ported to the new sim, and then i should put the new sim in the iphone and connect to itunes etc. they said that the new phone should be turned off for the sim porting to work

i dunno what difference it should make if it's on or off. right now i can't do nothing with the new phone

I used to work on a service desk for a phone retailer and was there for both the 3G and 3GS release, on the day it took forever for people to get on and was just a case of waiting sadly...

Well that's a big bunch of crap. How can they text an inactive SIM if the new one is ready to go. The phone does not have to be off either. Obviously, you are not going to put your new sim in until it is ready to go.

You will no once it is done as you will lose signal on your old phone and the screen will say something like 'Inactive SIM'

Mine is working but it is a Business phone and according the lady in the O2 shop, Business did whatever has to be done to swapover at their end rather than the customer doing it

I just synced mine with everything off my old iPhone and now it's working fine

At the moment my old SIM is still working (despite the switchover) on my old phone and the new microsim on the iPhone is still saying "Waiting for Activation".

The O2 side of it with the number moving over to new SIM is separate from the Apple side of it with activating the phone.

Oh well I'll just have to be patient I suppose

I couldn't be arsed waiting any longer - i just cut my old SIM down to microSIM size and used that in the new phone. All working fine now and iPhone activated straight away.

Once O2's systems eventually provision the official microSIM I'll just physically swap them over. Patience was never one of my virtues

Seriously? You can really do that? If that's the case why on earth have they introduced the micro sim? To save on weight !?!?!?!?!?!?

I'm sorry if I'm stating the obvious here and you've already tried this, but you may have to reboot the phone. I just did this after waiting for hours and straight away my new gorgeous iphone4 activated on o2.

My phone is still saying waiting activation but my old phone now doesn't have o2 so I'm without a mobile phone!

They did the migration code at the store whilst I was getting the phone.

They said it could take 2-24hours to transfer my number across, could this be the same for the activation? This is my first iPhone so I'm a bit of a novice!!

I didn't do the activation thing on the website as I thought that this had been done in store because she sent a text to my phone that was then entered into the computer. However, i'm now worried that this might have been to do with transferring my number across.

If this is wrong, I can't do the activation now as my old sim in phone does not have a service either!

Phone purchased at 0845 it's now 20:52 and I'm still waiting for activation. They weren't kidding when they said this may take some time.

Can anyone remember the days when we could make calls with our phones?

Sarah how long has your old sim been without coverage? Mine took about 30 minutes to go through. Chris20 you cant fit a normal sim into the Iphone4, unless you manually cut it down to size.... but this looks a bit fiddly...

Mine took about 4 or 5 hours. Phone would not activate until SIM was validated. It was also saying no service. Although I wasn't patient as mentioned in previous posts above, it does eventually go through if you wait long enough...

You'll know it's done when you old SIM (on old phone) stops working.

You could try this: Turn the phone completely off (keep power button pressed) until slider appears. Slide it then wait for screen to go black. Then use the tool to pop out the sim tray a few mm. Pop it back in and restart.
