Martin: Hypocritical?
Critical
31-05-2004
Don't you think that Martin from Corrie is being a bit hypocritical at the moment? He's furious with Katy for keeping Todd's affair from his family, but he actually kept his own relationship with Katy a secret from the Platts.

It does seem hypocritical but I think that keeping a secret from your partner is a more of an issue than keeping secrets from your ex-wife and kids. There is also the question of loyalty here. She chose to protect Karl, rather than her partner's family.

But was she really protecting Karl, or protecting Sarah?

She did the best thing she could have done, forced Todd to make a decision and come clean to Sarah. If she had told Martin, what would he have done? He would either of told Sarah and she would have no more believed him than she did Nick, or done exactly as Katie did and forced Todd into action.

I think she did the right thing, and I think Martin is blaming her for something that is in no way her fault.

I thought the way she came clean was really well done. She came across as a school kid who is proud of the fact that she knew the secret before anyone else. The quote about Sarah not being his real daughter emphasised her immaturity very well too.

She should have told Martin as soon as she knew, and at least then they would have been able to discuss the options.

Hypocrisy aside, I can't understand why Martin is making such a big deal of Katy's 'error of judgement' (as he sees it) anyway.

Martin is being a total hypocrite at the moment. Sally knew about his affair with Rebecca & Martin & he all but forced her to stay quiet. That situation is no different to Katy being torn between Todd & Karl and Sarah & her family. In both cases the actions of Martin & Todd tore their families apart.

Martin should also have some idea & empathy with what Todd is going through. Leaving recent events aside Todd is now facing the possibility that his son might die. Martin once faced a similar sort of scenario when Gail attempted to have a secret abortion. Her chased after her, caught up with her on a train & persuaded her to keep the baby (David). Perhaps he should reflect on how he felt them & he might have some idea of what Todd is feeling now.

As it happens Martin decks Karl next week anyway. Hardly the right way to go about things! I'm sure Katy was worried that this is what would happen anyway. Look at the way her dad resolves everything - with his fists. I'm sure she was worried that if she told Martin he would have leapt up and raced over to Todd and Sarah's flat and caused a fight. That would have been terrible for Sarah and Bethany.

His most hypocritical action is blaming Katy for the way he asked Sally to behave when he was having an affair with that Rebecca, as RK says, at the hospital.

And Karl doens't get decked! I believe the fight is two-sided...

Everyone is probably guilty of being hypocritical at some point in their lives and Martin is obviously no different. But I'm afraid when certain events affect the welfare of your children (as in Martin's case) then all common sense is bound to fly out of the window. He may be hypocritcal but at this moment in time he probably can't see past the misery his daughter is now suffering and feels the need to blame someone for it. As for the baby, Martin hasn't really got a say in the matter, that decision is down to Sarah and no one else.

Unlike Katy, Nick had first hand experience of Todd's homosexuality. Its odd that Martin has constantly berated Katy for keeping Todd's secret whilst Sarah and Nick got nothing more than a one minute rant from Gail.

I thought I completely agreed with you, but -- it wasn't just that he was having an affair with another woman, and he could finish it, end of story. Todd is gay and that wasn't going to change, so even though she did make him 'choose' and dump Karl, that isn't really good enough. If she had been a bit more mature she would have seen that even if he chose Sarah it was never going to turn out right, and Sarah needed to know what was happening.

However, what Martin thinks he could have added to the party I have no idea. He is as immature as her, homophobic (he refused to go to Karl's party because it would be full of homos) and not possessed of tremendous judgment himself (he married Gail )

Im just hoping that Katie 'roll eyes' will leave the soap. Her whiny voice and terrible hair doo are dreary. PLEASE someone sack the girl.

No, Martin is not homophobic. His anger at the moment is down to the fact that Todd has betrayed his daughter - not that he is gay.

Hmm, yes but he refused to go to the gay club, and he made a couple of less than enlightened comments about 'gays' to Katy a while back, before he knew about Todd -- that was what I was referring to.
Yes of course his real focus of anger is about Sarah being betrayed, but that doesn't preclude him from also being homophobic.

Martin never did have an affair with Carmel. She was a psyscho fatal attraction thing. Martin did however have a one night with some nurse he was working with. He did come clean with Gail and she was understandably very upset, but decided that everyone'sentitled to one mistake.

In a way, I did feel that Gail brought the second affair on herself, by refusing to sleep with martin until he had a vasectomy.

He had quite a lengthy affair with Kate from Eastenders. First him, then Phil, the woman has no taste

The only 'error of judgement' that Katy made was telling Martin she knew about the affair after everyone found out, i think it's unlikely anyone would do that in real life, having kept the secret for that long already.
