Hi readers. I want to purchase a new phone, either the iPhone 4 or an Android phone such as, Nexus One, HTC Desire or any other Android phone. The problem I have is that I can't make a decision.

I have played around on Android phones and love the customisation feature in comparison to iPhone. However, I never owned a Android phone, so I was wondering are there any features that I may/will miss??? If I decide to switch from iPhone.

Depends what your after really, The iphone 4G is more or less the same as the others, where with android, it is shit loads more customisable and alot more can be done. Iphone you cannot even bluetooth a picture over.

If you want the best choice of apps especially games (currently) and like itunes syncing then it's the iphone, if you want customisation, the extra features and freedom to do what you want and to save a fair bit of cash then it's an android phone like the Desire.

If you're deeply ingrained in iTunes then you'll miss the easy sync facilities, and similarly if you're used to iPhone apps that don't hdve an equivalent on Android turn you'll miss those. Otherwise, there are no real features that iPhone offers over Android, and there are plenty that Android offers over your CURRENT iPhone.

just to let you know i had an iphone 3g for a year and a half, loved it even with all its inherent little issues, had to make a big decision when the phone started to lock up constantly.

Well i opted for my desire sim free from amazon £379, and i well and truely love it, do i miss my iphone not for a minute.

App store : Android marketplace you may not have such a massive choice but its getting bigger, i have majority of apps that i used to have on the iphone on my desire.

Itunes on Iphone: Amazon app on the desire which seems alot more cheaper, faster and to be honest simpler.

Storage is custom to your needs on the desire, mine came with a 4gb card, but i think it can take up to 32GB.

Battery: swappable on the desire, not on the iphone, i used to constantly need to charge my iphone 3g, it would never last a full day, my desire seems to be managing two full days on a charge and im proper hammering it, but if it becomes an issue ill buy a charging dock plus battery so it can charge the phone plus the spare bat at the same time.

Internet tethering, will be enabled fully in the 2.2 android update which is supposed to be very soon, which will turn your desire into a wifi hotspot, allowing you to connect anything that has wifi to your phone, a bit like mifi.

The desire may not be as glam as the new iphone4g, but to be honest i feel its more practical with its rubber back, no fingerprints and a good grip, plus no scratches hopefully.

Plus one more thing my desire has had no reception issues unlike what seems to be happening with the iphone 4g, i can hold my phone how i like, left hand, right hand and even both hands, which i would have thought any phone owner would appreciate, plus what i dont get is apple are saying buy a cover, why? it just hides how the phone looks and if you are buying a phone like that you are getting it not just on the OS alone but for the way it looks.

Also just to warn you, apple for some reason will log facetime calls with who you are calling, where you are, and the length of call, this info gets sent to apple, even apple employees arent happy with it.

Also there have been reports of dodgy screens with yellow banding down or circles but apple will swap the unit if that happens.

And on a final note the HTC desire comes with a 2 year manufacturer warranty.

Im not a hater of apple, i have just had my eyes opened with what else is available, i have come to realise that the iphone was very much locked down in how you could use it.

Also another point there will be no way of unlocking/jailbreaking the iphone 4g, the phone does weekly updates to apple and the network, so if you can unlock/jailbreak it you would have to do it every week, but apparantly if your phone is found to be unlocked/jailbroken, which they will find out, it will void all warranty and customer support.

I completely agree 100%. I swapped too and dont regret it for a minute. The lack of multitasking killed me on an iphone. The desire is much more like a smartphone

Give it a year and the Android marketplace will be heaving.

Thats what they said this time last year. The market is unregulated and is a real task to navigate. Sadly, Android/Google/HTC seem more focused on playing catch up with the iPhone to really keep a killer handset. Instead they simply refresh them every couple of months leaving the previous 'killer handset' outdated and minus any sort of updates.

I was a total HTC fanboy and now ive reverted to the iPhone4 and now wont look back.

And by rooting (the android jailbreak) your phone you also void your warranty.

Best screen on a mobile device - ever.
Mac OSX operating system - easy to use, stable and a joy to use.
App Store via iTunes. Beautiful to navigate and come across apps you'll love.

Those are just a few of the reasons.

Apple focus on the software exclusively for the phones they design. They don't just whore out an OS to any piece of hardware that'll have it in order to maximise userbase. An OS built from the ground up for the hardware of the device it runs on.

Best phone out.

I would think the Galaxy S has the best screen,

Unless you only use the phone indoors.
Android 2.2's surplus of features is certainly an attraction.
It even runs on Intel CPU's.

Galaxy S does look nice (though Samsungs touchscreens feel very unresponsive compared to iPhone for me - though I do love Samsung technology and perhaps they've corrected it).

Thanks to everyone who have replied. I still haven't decided, but many here seem to like Android and never regret the decision. As 'Ohirome' pointed out, new Android phones release every couple of months, which worries me because if a new update was to release than a selection of phones are to be updated.

I got a desire a month or so ago - a breath of fresh air.

Proper multi-tasking, fully customisable, not hampered by any imposed limitations and I can't think of an app on the iphone I want that isn't on the andriod marketplace.

More importantly I don't need to go near the piece of bloated crap that is itunes.

The iPhone has the sharper screen for the percentage of the time that you can actually see it.

Anyway buy an iPhone if you have the money and want to run a good choice of games.
Get an Android if you want the whole web, its free google GPS maps and freedom to do/run software in the same manner as a normal 'open' computer.

edit: Unless you're referring to the AMOLED screen , in which case, if you are allow me to LOL. Suddenly every other screen can barely be seen suddenly even though we've had them working fine for years!

"You can actually see it". . . what like my old Nokia's, Samsungs, iPhones? . . .yeah they're all totally unusable. . .I don't know how humans have got by on those old screens for years.

It's probably safe to assume that the Nexus will continue to be promptly updated for the next couple of years at least. It won't be 'cutting edge' by then of course but as a Google 'experience' phone it should always be one of the first to receive any new Android update.

The presence of the sense interface on the Desire might however mean updates are either delayed or, at worst, not implemented at all.

The iPhone isn't really as special as you try to make it out to be.

Yes, I forgot. . because a phone uses AMOLED screen. . .the other screens we've always used are now actually "barely visible".

I've an about 8 year old Toshiba E800 with a great outdoors high res fully tranflective screen.
