Well. . .a company are allowed one slight error in a batch every once in a while.

I mean it's not like they pump out constant bile that barely gets any recognition at all in the technology world.

I'd swap it for a Nokia 3510i!

Samsung looks nice, but as I say I've always experienced lag and needing to try and tap the screen twice or three times to get things to work.

Apple is in a rather special position - a turd would get good reviews and there are fanboys to back it up.

You say well engineered, but it is hard to find an Apple product in recent times that doesn't have a design defect. Macbook plastic case cracking, wireless cards breaking, hard drives going. iPhone 3G/3GS case cracking, dodgy reception. Time Capsule power supply failure. PM G5 liquid cooling failure. iPhone 4 problems. None of those are limited to batches.

That's only a few examples.

I haven't heard of most of them (besides the MacBook cracks) so I doubt they were a massive issue.

All my Apple products are very well made and fixed by warranty.

Saying that my iPhone 3GS screen has dust under it, and I'm going to cause a fuss in the Apple store if they say they won't take the screen off and clean it.

You are being very economical with your opinion.
You already said 'it might have changed' with regards to the top of the range Samsung as apposed to a cheap £30 Samsung.
No doubt you are in shark salesman mode and I imagine 80% of iPhone buyers get railroaded into 'safe buying' via these half truths.

I used to have an iPhone and iPhone 3G. I now have a Nexus One. Plain vanilla Android is fine if you are a bit of a geek like me, but if you are someone like my fiance who has no interest in computers and technology then I would recommend the HTC Desire or the iPhone. The one major advantage of the Nexus One is that it should get updates faster rather than having to wait for HTC.

Hardware wise they are both pretty much the same, although I do find the iPhones touchscreen slightly better than the Android screen, the iPhone just seems to track your fingers more accurately and the Android phones sometimes go a bit AWOL but normally locking and waking solves the problem.

You can't go far wrong with either. If price is a factor, then go for the Android phones. If not then go check out the iPhone 4, HTC Desire and Google Nexus One (the Nexus One is exclusive to Vodafone unless you buy it unlocked at $529 direct from Google).

I do miss my iPhone a bit. Android is not as slick and polished. However, pretty much all the problems I have are software related which I am hoping and sure Google will fix pretty quickly and the Market is growing.

i'm in the same boat,never had a smartphone but want one now and the iphone does look good but the deals are far too much for me where as i can get a htc desire for free and £25 a month with 600 mins/500 texts and unlimited internet(though no idea how much the unlimited is for)

Check out a couple of the review videos on youTube for Samsung Galaxy S......This one is very responsive.......
I'm ordering mine next week to replace my iPhone.....Love my iPhone but need to check out the competition for a while. Better than being indoctrinated by marketing...Can always come back if necessary....

I would never buy any Apple products because there so hideously expensive, if you dont believe me then google mobile phone shops in the USA and look at what they pay compared to the rip of prices we pay.
I have a beautiful Samsung Galaxy portal with Android 2.1, it came with a 1gb SD micro card (take note other mobile phone company's) I get 500 anytime, any network minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet all for £20.00 a month with 3 network. see if you can get a deal like that with an iphone!

When are people going to realise that the iPhone just seems cheaper in america because the price is for the handset under contract?! Also, sim free phones are always going to be expensive - even rather old phones sell for a few hundred quid brand new.

The price doesn't include local taxes etc either. The prices are not that far apart......
