So iPhone 4 owners - is it worth it?
England Rocks

Somehow my local O2 store is claiming to still have stock of iPhone 4, so I intend to head up there first thing to nab me one.

Those who got it yesterday - is it worth it? It will cost me roughly £40 if I trade in old one so I'm not massively concerned about the cost, but if people say it's not really that great or there's loads of problems, I won't bother!

I cant imagine people who probably queued up for a couple of hours and spent a fortune are going to say its not worth it!!

Your best bet is to play around with one and see for yourself. I'm happy with mine so far. It's smooth and fast and sharp compared to my old one. There is currently a widely reported issue if you touch the bottom left of the stainless steel antenna where signal apparently drops out. Not everyone seems to experience this. But it could be due to having a case/bumper or how they hold it. Personally this issue hasn't affected me so far. Try before you buy if you can and check it out is the best bet.

psionic, you say the 4 is faster than your old one, what model did you upgrade from?

heeeheehee. I'm sure everyone will appreciate being told that its not a problem its just how they hold thats the problem.

On the contrary, re-read the post. Those NOT experiencing it might be due to having a case or how they hold it.

3GS. This model has been designed with iOS 4 from the outset and has more RAM.

i didnt notice much difference in speed between my 3GS and 4. Ever so slightly faster at launching apps but nothing huge. The camera on 4 is super fast though they really have improved that. And what a screen!

For me its not worth upgrading from my 3GS and im happy to wait until next year. I can see how much of an upgrade it is from the 3G though.

All down to personal opinion in the end and what you're looking for I suppose.

I would probably agree here, I found it a massive upgrade from the 3G but if I had a 3GS I think the upgrade would be minimal.

Well I queued up outside the O2 Store in Chester on the high street yesterday at 6am and I was 18th in that queue. The first guy who looked in his late 50's had been queuing since midnight so fair play to him. At that store around 7am one of the staff turned up wearing the iPhone 4 t-shirt and we asked whether it was worth us hanging around, she looked at the queue and said yes at the moment it is. About 7:15, another member of staff came out with his board to announce they had 31 iPhone 4 16GB models and 12 of the 32GB models. I was after a 32GB model myself having filled the 16GB iPhone 3G I have which I am going to be sending into envirofone this week.

By the time the guy had got around to the 15th person in the queue, I heard him say it's just the 16GB models now I'm afraid so at this point, I jumped out of the queue along with the lad next to me who was also after a 32GB and made my way up to the store in the precinct which wasn't allowed to open until 9am. The shutters were down at all of the entrances and I didn't really know which one I'd be best queuing at. There were about 10 people in front of me there. I pushed ahead once the shutters went up though and managed to get a 32GB model. At the store in the precinct, they said they had 40 of the 16GB models and 13 of the 32GB's though I heard someone say that figure was 19. It was about 10:30 when I got out of the store.

Is it worth it? Well it's still early days, I've read reports of the signal dropping out. At this time, I'm not in a great place for signal so its hard to tell whether I'm having that issue with mine. The screen is so much better than on previous models and it is so much faster than the old 3G. I didn't upgrade to iOS4 with the 3G after hearing of problems with the software on that phone.

Not had chance to test out the HD video recording yet or even taken photo's, I've just been organising my iTunes Library before throwing everything onto it, entering all my contacts and downloading apps. I've found a problem with the NatWest app so far and I'm aware that Sky Sports & News Mobile TV app is not compatible with iOS4 at the moment. Hope that is sorted out soon though.

It's certainly not as comfortable to hold in your hand as previous models either so I'm considering getting a bumper at some point soon, as I've been told that can make a difference.

I'd certainly agree with that. Having upgraded from a model which has now been phased out, you can see the benefits of the upgrade. If I'd had a 3GS, I don't think I'd have bothered upgrading.

Yeah I don't think technology moves on sufficiently every 12 month to warrant upgrading every 12 month. A 2 year upgrade will be the norm for me now.

Ive only used an iPod Touch so I enjoy it very much. I used to wish I could send a message or call someone using the iPod and now I can do that so for me, its been worth the wait.

I hope so because I am slowly comming round to the idea of doing an early upgrade.

I love my 3G to death so any improvement on that will be a bonus. If I wait any longer I think the value of the 3G will go down and I wont get as much for it if I trade it in and then I will have to spend more.

I alos notice the iOS4 OS is smoother on the iPhone 4? On my 3GS it was quite "choppy".

I agree! I upgraded from my 3G and the 4 is well fast. Coupled with a fantastic camera, and a screen that is unreal...definitely worth the upgrade.

No new ringtones though

The 3GS had a 600Mhz CPU and 256MB of RAM. The iPhone 4 has 1Ghz CPU and 512MB of RAM. The iPhone 4 was designed for iOS 4 so I guess that's why it's faster.

the processor is likely underclocked and so not quite 1ghz, but the experience should indeed be faster on an iphone 4

I finally got hold of my IPhone 4 today after having a few issues with TNT with the delivery I went to collect it from the depot so far I'm impressed with the speed of the phone compared to my older 3G model and love the new features it's an awesome phone.
