It seems like every other record these days has to have a rap part in the middle of it, like there's some new unwritten law of music production. I don't mind rap when it's done well but so often you can tell it's just been shoehorned in so they can put a "Featuring <insert name of famous rapper here>" on the label.

So many fantastic Gorrilaz songs have been ruined by it. . .great intro , beautiful song and then . . .rap.

Gorrilaz would be amazing if it weren't for everyone OTHER than Albarn.

alot of artists add a rap verse to a song that on the album version did not have a rap verse, to increase record sales e.g. Alexandra Burke

When Radio 2 play Katy Perry's new song (don't ask why) they seem to omit the rap from Snoop Dogg (is that who it is? I'm dreadful when it comes to identifying rappers). Personally I think it sounds a lot better, like a straight up summery pop song. The raps in a lot of songs just seem shoved in as if they're trying to say "oh hey I'm just gonna sneak this rap in here, help you get a few extra sales, take my pay cheque and bugger off."

I think California Girls, I Like It and All Night Long are all fantastic songs ruined by a terribly pointless rap.

And speaking of rap, when did She Said's rap become non-existant on the radio?

Hate rap music and this is the reason why. Great songs are ruined rap parts nowadays.

I think most of the time a rap is added so a song will be played on more radio formats. There's usually a non rap edit that gets sent to some stations, and the rap version is sent to urban stations.

I've never known someone to buy a song just because of a rap in the middle of it, though.

Likewise why do so many rap songs have a shitty vocal hook these days.

It's mostly about making the song as successful as they can.

- it essentially doubles the audience by having two artists, but it doesn't require as much effort as a 'duet' (a la Gaga + Beyonces' Telephone).

- it's easily removed, unlike a duet collaboration, when performing because it's an add on rather than constant part of the song.

- having an urban/hip hop artist featured gets the song played on more radio stations, which in the US contributes to the chart placing.

- gives a pop song that might be overlooked by certain audiences a bit more 'street-cred'.

It's the same reasoning for why rap/urban acts feature pop artists to sing their hooks etc. Though, that has more to do with the fact the majority of them can't sing...so need someone to do it for them.

Although firmly in the pro-rap camp and I love hiphop, dizzees bit on that do they know its christmas remake made me puke - though saying that the whole track had me retching so maybe you have a point.

The sign of a producer with no original ideas (that's also why autotune gets used on so many records these days)

I think I'll go against the negativity and say that I think the raps actually add something to it. I get bored easily with songs, so having that there rather amuses me ^^

Well, so many songs these days are quite repetitive, aren't they?

Yeah I agree there. Although usually if they are repetitive I end up listening over 100 times and then hating it.
Examples: Candy, Rude Boy, etc.

Having a rap in certain songs is not needed

Bad boys, All night long, California gurls and loads of others (my mind's gone blank of any others) really didn't need those rappers in those songs. I think Flo rida and Pitbull were added as a way to get US interest for Burke but when is she even gonna start attempting to even break into the US.

I don't like the rap in Umbrella from jay z. Not needed at all. I actually had a version without it back when the song first came out but it got deleted when i eventually got her album.

All of the songs you have mentioned there, I feel have benefited from having these rappers in. Bad Boys probably wouldn'tve done as well, California Gurls is just genius, and All Night Long; it was alright to begin with, but having Pitbull made it a lot better, i think.

Also, if songs are album tracks, and the album has been out for a while, I think it's definitely warranted. I had listened to All Night Long a LOT when I first got the album; having a new video AND having Pitbull made me listen to it a lot more.

The only one I really liked was World in Motion because they got John Barnes to do it and its a fun song.

Indeed and it seems that many other artists are going down the rap route in a desperate attempt to be cool when really it just ruins a track. I loved the Plan B song the 1st time I heard it until I heard his little chavvy rap in the middle and wondered why he ruined it. Rap is awful it has it's place but I hope it won't ruin too many other tracks.

John Barnes = Legend

Wordl In Motion was just a perfect song both as a football song and non-football song.

My personal football song of all time is Three Lions though.

Anyway back on topic the reason why there is so much obligatory rap on records is because it sells, as much as I hate rap.

Songs nowadays have to tick as many boxes as possible and appeal to a wide a range of people as possible ergo Wrappers! Shizzle!

I agree with the thread in general, but I think Snoop Dogg is great on California Gurls and that it adds to the song.

Flo Rida on Alexandra Burke's 'Bad Boys' adds nothing to the song. He's only there to bump up sales in a massive, very competitive US market for when they plan to go there. Take his rap off that song and you don't even miss him - in fact, I think he plumped into the middle of it and sticks out like a sore thumb.

Pitbull added something to 'All Night Long'. I don't know what exactly but he made the song far better and more energetic with his rap.

'California Gurls' without Snoop would be strange. The song is supposed to be fun and summery - his rap doesn't slow it down and get in the way like other raps do in other songs.

I hate rap and hip hop music, and it continues to dominate the charts each week. I've heard Forever Young be ruined by awful rapping, the original Alphaville version is much nicer on the ears.

The only time I have liked rap was in the "Superstar" song (I forget the artists) and UB40's Reggae Music, although that was made 17 years ago.

I think Pitbull's rap ruins Alexandra's 'All Night Long'. I just find him irritating sometimes.
