I got myself an iPhone 4 on launch the other day, along with a MicroSIM in-store as I wasn't one of those fortunate enough to be sent a Micro SIM in the post.

I was told about registering the MicroSIM online which I knew about but bear in mind it wasn't actually until several hours later that I began setting up the iPhone.

Between the time of purchase and setting the new iPhone up, the old 3G iPhone I've got had lost any signal and displayed as No Service. It was like that for a good hour or so as I was driving at the time while the device continued to play music during my trip.

I went over to the O2 website to carry out the registration of the MicroSIM and on there, I entered my phone number only to be told I'd have to enter a verification code that would be sent by text but with no service on the 3G, I wondered how to get this code.

Shortly after that I began setting up the iPhone 4 and everything seemed pretty normal. The phone activated in iTunes and seeing as it was saying I've got O2 coverage and was able to make and receive calls, I thought nothing more of it, even though a code later came through by text which I assumed would be expired, I left it at that.

The phone continued to work fine throughout the evening and really since yesterday morning, I don't think I've seen any signal whatsoever which I do find a bit odd. I do get signal drop-outs here but usually there is some sign of coverage returning within a few minutes.

I did call O2 yesterday evening, from my landline and ended up being on the phone for almost half an hour before finally getting some help. I explained what had happened over the MicroSIM and she said everything appears fine with your account and there's no reported outages in your area. I then mentioned that the phone was working fine the night before and how I'd been without coverage for most of the day with no signal returning at any point. She suggested I switch the 3G setting to off to get a better 2G coverage but I understand that the phone will look for the strongest signal or provide the best service it can from whichever mast is in range.

Situation is still the same now. With no signal or anything, I'm not too sure how I am meant to try and register this MicroSIM, if it needs it. Another call to O2 maybe, unless anyone here has some advice.

Thanks.

Silly question, but have you tried a) turning it off and on again or b) taking out the micro sim and re-inserting it?

The first worked for me and I've read that others have done the second with success.

Signal has since come back. Attempted to register the MicroSIM just in case that could be an issue and the SIM serial number was rejected. It just said that there's a problem with the serial number provided but at least things are appearing to be a bit more normal now.

Tried switching it off and on again. Signal came back after about a minute, it went, it came on, went again and came back. Seems to be a bit better now. I'm in a patchy area anyway so sometimes hard to tell whether the problem is with the reception or the MicroSIM card.
