iPhone 4 yellow screen

26-06-2010
Woke up this morning and decided to sort out all my contacts with e-mail addresses and proper naming etc. After a few I noticed a yellow line along the bottom of the screen that I hadn't noticed during the first day or so of use. I did a quick google and saw some shots that were exactly the same as I have.

Most sites seem to have the same message, which is it going away after a while as the glue
hasn't fully dried or evaporated yet. Apparently it goes away after time and use.

I didn't notice the problem straight away as I suppose I didn't spend long on a plain White screen. If you look in you contacts or have one of the torch apps you should soon see if you have the problem.

Have any of you got the same? I suppose it's a bit too soon to call it a big issue as it may well go away after it has settled in. Hopefully with time it will clear up as reports say. As stock is low there is probably no point trying to get it replaced just yet. But if it is no better after a week I will book an appointment at an Apple store to try and get a replacement.

Please post if you have this issue. It seems there are some with spots and some with lines. The spots have been reported to clear up but not heard anyone say if the line has gone away. So, with this thread we will get a better idea of peoples true experiences with this problem and if it really does go away.

Wouldn't it make more sense to take it back? You stand a much better chance of getting a replacement and not a repair if you act sooner rather than later.

I'm sorry for your problem!

I've been scrutinizing mine closely ever since I got it and haven't seen anything untoward yet.

I have read though that in some cases, the yellow discolouration has just disappeared. I hope that your's does too.

I read that the yellow is to do with the adhesive used to bond the screen. It's yellow because it hasn't evaporated properly hence why it seems to disappear in a few days.

I have the exact same problem. I'm currently on iPhone 4 number 2 after the first had a camera fault as well as it not detecting my sim at random times. This phone currently has a thin yellow line along the bottom of the screen. Thankfully mine is only faint and over the course of 24 hours it has faded even more which I have been checking using a torch app showing a bright white screen.

Some report until it evaporates fully it can be more present when the phone is warm after playing a game or something else that uses a lot of processing power. Upon playing a game for 20 minutes this morning and noticing the phone was warmer than normal the yellow bar is now very faint compared to just yesterday. A big relief. Hope the same happens to you.

Doing nothing in case 'the glue has not yet dried' sounds stupid in the extreme.
How about buying a block of 'mature cheese' and having to wait 6 moths for the taste to 'mature'

Get one where the glue is dry! Don't be yet another kamikaze pilot with your money.

Why exactly is it 'stupid in the extreme'?

The way the stock situation is at the moment your only option is to go to the nearest Apple store (which is a few hours away in some cases) and hope they have some new ones for replacement. Network shops (O2, CPW etc) certainly don't have any stock.

The glue evaporating is a case of a 2-3 days with no lasting effects once sorted. The next shipment of iPhones is due on the 5-6th July. You've got 9-10 days wait if there are none in stock anyway so why not see if the issue sorts itself in the meantime? If it doesn't then you can still take it back and get a replacement.

More than likely once you are used to it you hardly know it is there and thus will think it has faded.
If true and it is not dry then one would also think that the bond will be now weak by using the thing before it is ready.

At least report it immediately!

Not seeing it on mine thankfully, but if I was in your position I'd take it back to Apple if it's still there by Monday.

Exactly, and thank you for applying the same intelligence to the situation as I have.

Taking it back now is not going to achieve anything as there is no stock to replace and all it is likely to be replaced with is a first batch model with potentially the same issues. By waiting a few days to see if it really does clear up is the best approach at present until apple give an official response to the issue (probably a one line e-mail telling us we are looking at it wrong ).

The line is still as bold as ever today, although I suppose it is still early days.

I think I will drop an email to apple just to make them aware that I have the issue now so they have my report on file if it doesn't go away, that way I should be able to sort out a replacement if it is doesn't clear up once stock becomes available.

I'm using the phone regularly and getting it warmed up and then letting cool, but don't think the line has faded yet. It might be a bit lighter on the right side than the left bit that might just be down to perception. There is no way I can just get used to this if it doesn't clear up as I find it very noticeable, especially when typing messages in landscape.

Has anyone else has the line and it gone away yet or maybe contacted apple about it and had a response?
