I think another Time Loird (Time Lady ??).

Could be the Rani - or even Romana

Time Lords can regenerate, remember ?

Still, I don't think she is the master.

Why would it be Romana ? Romana was a great friend of the doctor.

I believe she is the person that kills the Doctor in the future. As to her identity, perhaps a future assistant? Wife?

Interesting the water link between river and pond. Also, river song sounds a bit like reverse song. How do you reverse a river or a song? Reverse is interesting because her story with the doctor is being told in reverse. The river of time flowing backwards. Also, silence. Song is noise. You can silence a song. I don't think all this is incidental. They're not clues to be solved, but thematically, I think the name was chosen with certain stories in mind.

Just to go for the obvious riff on the thread title, "Who" is River Song, 100-1 odds the twelfth doctor?

She's definitely not all that she seems because when she told the doctor that he would find out who she was very soon, she said "im sorry, everything is going to change"

If everybody would have forgotten the Doctor how did she remember him?

In Cold Blood the Doctor remembered Rory, wasnt that because he was a Time Lord and they see things differently?

Perhaps she is a Time Lady or something along them lines, hence why she remembered the Doctor.

Interesting point, the Dalek knew of her but did not recognise her.....

Could she maybe be the Master's wife reincarnated?

She's not of Rory's time line, it's supposed to be different, like how Amy remembered the Soldiers in the angel episode, but their companions never.

She must be an Ood then. Or a Doo?

My theory is she is The Doctor (or some version of him in the future).
The fact she knows his real name means she is someone very close to him.

They always said a female Doctor would be interesting

But doesn't fit with the line "I learnt from the best" and when the doctor turns and smiles thinking she's talking about him adds "you were away that day"*, sounds more like someone that was educated with him say like the Master.

*Or words to that effect.

She was joking when she said that. In Series 5 Episode 12 she said "You taught me!!!" when he told her she wasn't flying it properly.

I think it's been signposted that the show may revisit the consequences of the Doctor having stolen the Tardis. That mythos may be integral to the newly restored time line, so maybe an antagonist will exist for him to have stolen it from? What exactly have we seen him tell Amy about his past this year? Because she's certainly conjured up her parents and Rory and the doctor. Could she inadvertently have created the next villain as well? It does seem likely there's some link between River and Amy that we're not privy to yet.

Not terribly relevant I know, and it's probably been mentioned before, but I was listening to Van Morrison's Moondance album earlier and noticed the lyric:

Quote:
“And when I come to her that's where I belong
Yet I'm running to her like a river's song”

In the song 'Crazy Love'. I wonder if Moffat's a fan?
