Very interesting! No surprise to see Alicia at the top, that song's been everywhere for ages

Surprised to see Robbie so high up though, can't say I've heard YKM that much since last year.

Interesting to note tha despite reaching #1 on airplay, Joe McElderry isn't in the top 40 at all. Looks like Radio completely abandoned him after the first week of the year.

As it seems to be a hot topic here, the airplay #1s and their relation to the Radio 1 Playlist:

Joe McElderry - The Climb - Not playlisted
Lady GaGa - Bad Romance - A listed
Owl City - Fireflies - A listed
Alicia Keys - Empire State Of Mind (Part II) - A listed
JLS - One Shot - A listed
Cheryl Cole - Parachute - A listed
Scouting For Girls - This Ain't A Love Song - A listed
Plan B - She Said - A listed
Alexandra Burke feat. Pitbull - All Night Long - Not playlisted
Kylie Minogue - All The Lovers - A listed
Lady GaGa – Alejandro - A listed

So only two of the year's #1s weren't playlisted by Radio 1, and both of them X Factor winners

Gosh Radio 1 really hate X Factor winners don't they.!? Yet they have no problem playlisting JLS or Cheryl. Also All Night Long was given 5 stars by Radio 1, and Parachute 3 stars yet they didn't playlist ANL but playlisted Parachute.

Parachute got 5 stars too - http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/chartblog...arachute.shtml (although they hated it on their review show)

Although I think it's fair to say quality doens't come into it. I don't think it's anything against The X Factor winners really, it's more of a coincidence. Though I guess we'll see if they playlist Start Without You.

I think they're fine with playlisting stuff like JLS and Diana because ti doesn't have anything to do with Simon

I meant the review show. (I got confused). Either way I hate Radio 1 and don't understand their vendetta against X Factor.

Their review show is bizzare in regards to what they say is good and what makes the playlist. The thing is even the DJs don't get a say and often hate the songs they're playing (e.g. Chris Moyles and Basshunter)

Great post - shows how stupid the record buying public is - If they hear any old shite often enough they'll buy it.
I reckon money changes hands because these figures prove that success is guaranteed with airplay so the radio stations, particularly Radio 1, are playing at being God.

Do they really have something against X Factor Winners? I thought they playlisted "the Climb" last year a lot?

Really don't know why they have something against Alexandra. Did she do something against them? She got some popular songs and definitely at least the same level as JLS, Diana, and Cheryl.

But for Joe McElderry they invited him to the Radio 1 Big Weekend to perform at the Live Lounge and have a major guest spot and more performances on the 5.19 show and bus.

The climb didn't really deserve to be playlisted did it.

As for alexandra, i dunno, maybe they just really hate pitbull.

I really dont understand why Radio 1 didnt playlist Alexandra - even if it was just on the C-List. She was lucky that every other radio station saw sense and played her non-stop.

Shameful list. Shows how much chavs have taken over the charts. I used to love tuning into the UK top 40 but now I dont because I know that it will be overated and dull I think in the past 2 years I have liked about 20 songs that have charted in the singles charts. The album charts is much better.

You say it like you've just worked it out.

Mate, this is half the point of music radio. And success is guaranteed with airplay because people only buy music that they know about. Very few people go "well, I've never heard a single word about this band, but **** it I'm gonna buy this music." People will usually only buy music that they have listened to. If it is on the radio people more people will have listened to it and so more people will know whether they want to buy it. It's not exactly rocket science.

Just as a contrast - the chart of 25 years ago this week.
Count the number of genuine classics there that you still want to hear 25 years later.

Try telling that to 99% of the single buying public - they don't recognise they're being brainwashed - they think they have good taste and are being selective. We should demand a wider range of music on our airwaves rather than
the few that pay for the privilege being played 50,000 times.

Sad, yet predictable, state of events that essentially all bar a few artists on those lists are somehow connected to the X Factor.

Wasn't expecting Alicia's version of ESOM to be the number 1, figured it would be the original. It is one hell of a tune though. Same goes for Bad Romance.

Wow what an excellent site, need to be careful as I could easily lose a few hours browsing there.

I think that chart illustrates the weighting effects of the playlist system. Jennifer Rush is there 'bubbling under' in lower reaches with The Power Of Love, which didn't actually hit the top 40 and get to number one until almost 4 months later. So for all that time it must have been getting regular but low-key airplay for people to keep making the effort for so long to go out to buy the physical single. In today's system of course if it's not 'A B or C list', it doesn't get played at all.

How is alicia number 1? God that song is so overplayed now. Yawn. She's a lot better then that anyway.

Oh well
