Super AMOLED vs. Retina

When HTC finally get a 2.2 ROM out for it, I will have no need to root. It does everything else I could want.

It's not like my iPod or an iPhone where you have to jailbreak for the slightest thing that Apple or the network doesn't want you to use.

I don't have an issue with Android's multitasking (but I am used to proper multitasking, since I've had Nokias for years), however I do have that nice 1GHz processor and 576MB RAM. Both exceed the iPhone 4, I believe.

Which phone was that? I remember the Hero got a bit sluggish if too much was running but my Desire runs plenty without any issue.

Apart from all the iphone/android bashing that is going on here...! back to the point of the topic...! I keep reading how fantasic the iphone4 display is and the pixel density is so great the human eye can't see it..!!! Well i've got a HTC Desire and i'd be buggered if i can see the pixels on that..!! (must be getting old!) no serious i've got prefect vision.. All this rubbish about i've got more pixels than you is a waste of time... As for how good each one is in direct sunlight..!! yet again more rubbish, I can't see outta my car windscreen when the sun is shining straight in..!! hence why cars are fitted with sun-visors..!! so use ya hand or ya head to shield the phone from direct sunlight... problem solved...

Think some people are confusing SUPER AMOLED for the old standard AMOLED, Samsungs new super amoled is much better and is more visable under sunlight than the amoled. There really isn't much between the super amoled and retina, Engadet have done a comparison of the 2 and it is very close. http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/24/i...-amoled-fight/

Agreed, which is why I made my judgement based on an actual side by side comparison.....There isn't that much in it when you actually get to see them both perform....
Having said that, I doubt that the screen alone would sell a phone....

Super Amoled is revolutionary(if you have to use that word) whilst the 'retina' display is high quality old technology.
Quite weird how both phones use pretty much the same CPU and chipset.

Not that surprising really, 99% of mobiles are on an arm variant, and there aren't that many mobile GPU suppliers either.

Although the Broadcom video in the N8 is looking like being *very* interesting.

Yes ARM but both are the Coretex A8 with same GPU too.
Both of these are produced by Samsung with seemingly very minor differences.
It could be that Apple were slow developing so sweet/money talked Samsung into putting a sticky A4 label on theirs.
Apple do now have a license to use ARM designs but maybe are not yet the up to speed with the skillset needed.

Check out the N900 - same Cortex A8 and GPU.

Apple should be up to speed with ARM design, as they bought out Intrinsity who have been working on ARM for years.

Lol, when I bought that Archimedes A310 years back, did a CPU upgrade on it, I didn't quite expect that CPU architecture to take the world by storm

It would make sense for Apple to share the development with Samsung.
Especially in that there seems to be only minor differences between the old iphone Samsung SOC and the new iphone SOC.

A cheap article in the extreme though. In that most know they use the A8 CPU.
It is all the bit and bods on the SOC that define it.

I do wonder whether the complexity of making a faster, yet lower power, dual core version (like Tegra 2) is why we got 'just a big iPod'.
Being first has value, especially if you already hog all the media publicity.
The Archos 5 was first with the A8 by a long margin but hardly anyone wanted a mini tablet.

It may have already been said, but, my understanding is that Apple were going to use the Super AMOLED but Samsung could not guarantee the numbers required.....

Could be right. Super AMOLED is very very new.

And maybe as important for Apple they supposedly cost near double. 4 times the cost of the old iPhone screen?
Unluckily for Samsung their Super AMOLED will no doubt have a 'Super AMOLED is crap' Californian Wave.

Super AMOLED is exclusive to Samsung for 18 months I believe.
Apple should have gone down the AMOLED route as this would have been the better option due to its energy saving results.
