“CORONATION STREET is to radically change schedule in a move that is likely to draw huge ratings to the soap.

Currently the schedule for the soap is very scattered, ranging from 5 to 7 episodes a week. From August, it will revert to four. However, two of these four episodes will last 45 minutes.

Here is the planned schedule:

Sunday 7:30 to 8:00
Monday 7:30 to 8:15
Wednesday 7:30 to 8:00
Friday 7:30 to 8:15

This would mean that, unless the BBC move their Monday and Friday editions of EastEnders to 8:15, the last 15 minutes of Coronation Street will clash with its arch rival.

This news comes barely a week after EastEnders hit an all time low of 6.4 million, while Corrie drew a huge audience of almost 14 million in a triple bill last Monday.

The ITV soap has pulled out the big guns, including four explosive storylines which will run through the summer and through the autumn, in a bid to crush the ailing EastEnders, which is currently believed to be going through a "bad spell".

A spokesman said "The coming months are going to be very exciting."”

Thank god. i hate all the extra episodes and i like the idea of 45 minute ones

This was also posted on the BBC soap site. where is this from??

if its true, its a bit of a gamble, surely ratings will drop in the last 15 minutes of the episode and people will turn over to EE, but 45 minutes seems a bit odd.

that's bollocks, just an imbecile posting fake press releases and other imbeciles passing them on to every forum they can find.
I've got a good mind to report this thread as the starter obviously registered just for that.
What happened to that new ITV soap rumour that was going around a couple of months ago ?

I think it is one of those rumours that gains pace on various talkboards. I haven't seen any editorial that suggests it's true (it might be, but I reserve judgment as there doesn't seem to be reliable source for it).

Just a rumour. Although last summer ITV dropped the 8.30 Monday Corrie for 2 months for a summer break. A 45 minute Corrie on a Monday wouldnt just bugger up the BBC's schedule it would mess up ITV's aswell, as they have to get to the news by 10.30 they would prob have an odd 15 minutes to fill. Very unlikely they would do this.

Exactly what i was thinking! has ITV ever done a 45 minute programme before?

I thought they would only do programmes that either lasted the whole hour or half an hour, and the only time they would have odd timed programmes are late at night, when the scheduling isn't that important.

yes that occurred to me too -- if something like the Bill is going to follow Corrie, the timings will then be out on that and so on till the news.

Wish people would engage brain before posting rumours as fact... of course that assumes everyone has a brain, which doesn't always seem to be necessarily the case.

It is completely impracticable for a TV station to run a 45 minute episode. How would that effect all other programmes around it? The convention for programme length would have to be broken all over the shop and we'd end up with all sorts of times!

Don't believe this one bit.

They've done a 45-min Corrie only once before around New Year 2000. And that was a special. I equally don't believe this rumour: I can't see in any way how it could possibly work with other programming schedules. I don't think ITV would ever clash Corrie with EastEnders for fear of loss of viewers. Because although EastEnders is terrible at the moment, there will always be a few who remain loyal and would turn over. I think to keep the same amount of time suggested in the rumour, which is the same as it is regularly, two and a half hours, the only option would be an hour on Wednesday as there is no Eastenders.

I wish they would go back to just Mon, Wed & Fri but give us a full half hour (allowing for ads of course). Recently Corrie has started late and gone to adverts within 8 minutes!!!!

some episode of corrie only run for 22 mins!

I don't think the BBC or ITV would ever dare running Coronation Street and Eastenders against each other. They have always tried to avoid it before, it would seem to the viewing public that the one who makes the move, is just simply trying to score ratings, without thinking of the interest of the viewing public.

Running them against each other will not be good for either of them. ITV make their money through advertising spots around Corrie, so what they need to do is GAIN more viewers, crushing Eastenders is not in ITV's interest, because Eastenders doesn't go up against Corrie.

You can't just suddenly state that without giving a valid reason. Why should any of us believe a random post like that?

I cap Corrie and Emmerdale, they ALL run for 22 mins, without the ads.

I don't think either of those animation houses could cope with the requirements of 3/4 episodes a week. Do you know how long it takes to make those programmes? No wonder they are only 15 minutes long...

i hope that this isn't true.admittedly with having ITV2 and BBC 3 it won't stop me seeing both shows, but i feel the 45 minute shows might stretch things a bit.
