Looks likely that Luther will be getting another series:
Quote:
“Luther looks set for a recommission, with discussions currently under way with lead actor Idris Elba’s agent in the US.
However, it is understood that due to his commitments in Hollywood, the option of either two specials or a full six-part series are both being explored.
The 6 x 60-minute crime drama featuring Elba, famed for his role as Stringer Bell in The Wire, was heavily promoted when it launched in May and hailed as an example of the kind of ambitious drama of which the BBC wanted to do more.
Made in-house, it followed troubled murder detective DCI John Luther and was critically acclaimed, with the first episode securing an impressive audience of 5.76 million (24.2%) on BBC1 and BBC HD in its 9pm slot.
However, it did lose viewers over the series, down to 4.18 million (18.5%) half way through its run and ending on 3.69 million (15.8%). Overall, the series average of 4.23 million (17.9%) was only slightly below its slot average of 4.41 million (18%).
The BBC has been praised for securing the Hollywood A-lister and for featuring a black male lead in the series, and it is keen to secure a new deal.
Earlier in the year, BBC Worldwide managing director of sales and distribution Steve Macallister told Broadcast he was working on strategies to create drama franchises of the scale of 24 and Heroes as an alternative to shows produced by the dominant US studios.

Official average for series one was 5.01m which is decent, although it masks the fact that the audience dropped every week apart from the last episode where it settled just above 4m. The writer Neil Cross is under an exclusive BBC contract which may have swung it in his favour as if this got axed, he'd have to start all over again with a new show which would've taken more time and resources.

Series averages for IAC are: S1- 7.58m, S2- 8.55m, S3- 11.02m, S4- 8.66m, S5- 9.42m, S6- 8.01m, S7- 7.34m, S8- 8.78m, S9- 9.37m.
ITV will keep it in November due to increased pre-Christmas advertising sales at that time of the year.
