They did well on Boxing Day last year with Harry Hill, Ant and Dec and Family Fortunes last year so I think sticking with that line up along with Benidorm instead of that celebrity impressions rubbish could lead to a very goo night for them.


Yeah it didn't do too well compared to what it normally gets but 5.9m against EastEnders, The Vicar of Dibley and Little Britain is still a very good audience for ITV on Christmas Day. But any Christmas specials of regular shows ITV air on Christmas Day tend to lose about a third of their regular audience (Doc Martin, TV Burp, Dancing on Ice, Mr and Mrs, Poirot) so I can see why they don't tend to bother too much.

I still don't understand why Life of Riley does so well, but My Family isn't doing as well this year as it has done in previous years. Summer Wine will overtake it tomorrow and I think BBC1 has made a mistake in axing it. Very sad state of affairs that ITV1 hasn't aired any sitcoms this year at all.

Hi Gary, I think it was 21 million. This also started the long tradition of showing soaps on Christmas Day. EE really was a big hitter for the BBC then and Coronation St seemed to be in decline- until, of course, the following Christmas with Hilda Ogden leaving and the arrival of Allan Bradley.

Boxing Day's on a Sunday though this year which may affect what they put there... I'd more than likely say Christmas Eve as its a Friday.

Thanks for reminding me how great Rock and Chips did! It did brilliantly and was against Dancing on Ice!! I really hope the BBC commission a series (but is it really a sitcom? )

Outnumbered's ratings were very good this series and I would not be surprised if a Christmas special takes a prime time slot on Christmas Day this year.

Life of Riley's rating's are just shocking! How on earth did it get nearlly 6 million viewers? !

I can see the last ever Last of the Summer Wine topping 6 million if promoted properly.

I think that it's been confirmed Rock and Chips is being turned into a series.

I don't think Gavin and Stacey will be beaten unless it gets pipped by something at Christmas.

At least the sitcom shortage will make it easy for me to keep the list up to date!

Hmm, true they may opt for a 2 hour drama instead, but I don't think the days of the week matter too much with Christmas Eve/Day/Boxing Day. I don't like the idea of it going out on Xmas Eve as audiences tend to be lower (and BBC1 tends to air comedy there too).


The only thing I can see beating Gavin and Stacey is The Royle Family at Christmas if they do another special as it got 11.7m or something last year. Keeping the programme list up to date must be a bit of a nightmare, but I do wish there were more sitcoms (not too many to make keeping the list up to date too difficult though! ), especially on ITV1 as the lack of them there is horrific.

Are there any sitcoms other than the Benidorm special coming up on ITV1 this year? As far as I know, BBC One's autumn sitcoms will be Come Fly With Me, Mrs Brown's Boys and Reggie Perrin. And maybe Not Going Out if it's ready in time.

Dancc - do you know when the Australian X Factor is starting on Seven? I saw some promos for it on YT today and they're awesome and it seems like they're really promoting it. I know it flopped on Ten five years ago but it looks like it'll be very similar to the current British version so I think it'll rate well.

Series 7 will just be 10 episodes but an eighth, 20 part series has already been commissioned apparently. I'm beginning to wonder if they're increasing the number of episodes per year to 30 as series 6 is beginning in lateAugust/September according to a WR website, which is usually very reliable with this sort of thing as it has direct links with the BBC.

In comparison to other programmes on 7Two, it'll probably rate well because it'll be an original programme rather than repeats which seem to be on most of the time on those 'sister channels'.


Yep, he's one of the four judges on their version. Australia's Got Talent also brought in an Irish judge (Brian McFadden) for their latest series and the series was received well, so I think they want to replicate that formula.

BB will be down tonight or probably the same as last week (2.5m) because of Sherlock.

I'm expecting 7.1m, a 400k drop from last week.

The BBC definitely have a lot of confidence in it, then, with 50 episodes commissioned!

Really difficult to tell. If it was shown at the same time as last week, I'd expect it to rise a bit, given the feedback, but with the earlier start, and being "out of sync" with ITV, I'd go for about the same.

It does look fantastic. Seven have put together an excellent ad campaign.

No official launch date yet but Monday 16th August at 7:30pm is looking very likely.

Im sure I read somewhere that the aggregation was something like 19 million on Christmas Day and 11 million for the omnibus. Sounds unlikely but I think its the case-the omnibus was very popular.
The aggregation was the way they did things then so the figures are always quoted as though they are one viewing. According to Televisions Greatest Hits Eastenders was number one in the ratings constantly from October 21st 1985 to Oct 23rd 1988 bar just one week. Aided by the aggregation obviously but surely no show will ever dominate to that extent again.

NB that one week was Coronation Street and I think it was Hilda Ogdens last episode.

So a crap night basically, with the most watched show being Casualty with an astonishing 4.9m.

So thats 2.05m for BB, not bad at all for a Saturday
