Much as I personally dont get XF, those figures are astonishing in comparison to the rest of the Saturday night stuff recently-like a tidal wave of interest flooding back in.Amazing how one show can make such a difference and how impossible it is to create a rival show. Maybe the Cole press coverage helped but even so.BBC1 depressed up until 9.00 with Casualty becoming the prime draw for people when there is nothing much elsewhere.

Are the rest of the audition show 1 hour? The BBC will be hoping so as 90 mins destroys their early evening.

The remaining audition episodes will be 75 minutes, like last year.

Interesting that the BBC1's primetime share was 18% which is pretty respectable all things considered. It's more than what ITV1 has had all summer on Saturday nights.

I am thinking that too, and judging by the lack of talent in last nights episode, it does not bode well. I don't think they have found anyone outstanding this year, it seems all about the judges own dramas and problems behind the scenes

It was hilarious to see the 'Coming Up' bit - with teasers of Cheryl Cole's malaria - it was like ' Britain's Got The Pop Factor' with the Nan having the heart attack

Odd One In, while the idea is as old as the hills, seems like a reasonable success for ITV and should get recomissioned. Its probably a better long term vehicle for Manford than a certain other show that he is involved in. Maybe ITV should offer him a deal?

X Factor continues to be on another level, I think the presence of guest judges might help the auditions stay fresh this year. Good start for the Xtra Factor aswell.

Having said that surely from ITV's point of view losing so many viewers at 9pm is unacceptable? It happens every year yet they never seem to come up with a show that can hold on to a significant part of the XF's audience.

I think a lot X Factor's audience would probably be heading off for a night out at 9/10pm on a Saturday night, so may be this is a reason why ITV1's audience declines quickly at that time..when X Factor ends I don't see any significant rises in audience on other channels either.

Surprising that with some dismal August weather for many, unprecedented summer-long TXF/Cheryl/Cowell hype, virtually every newspaper front page yesterday having TXF stories planted there by the TXF PR team, and a typically August line-up from BBC1, TXF couldn't break the 50% share mark.

BBC1 held up really well, getting better numbers than ITV's usual summer line up was getting in recent weeks, but clearly there is no sense in scheduling Casualty up against TXF this autumn, even if the ratings do now drop off after the flurry of "let's see what all the fuss is about/watch Cheryl collapsing" interest yesterday. Personally I'd rest Casualty now until the Saturday after TXF finishes, but that's obviously not going to happen.

That John Bishop beat Magic Numbers despite a 3.9m inheritance against an 11.5m one is somewhat embarrassing for ITV - the channel mass-millions tune into now only for one particular tiring format.

Oh, and I was about right yesterday with my TXF prediction in pure numbers terms, even if the share was below par...

By Christmas, you will have seen the answer to that one. Expect unprecedented programme lengths this season and a 5 hour final over two nights in December.

By which time, the cow will be flat on its back, udders-up, gasping for its last breath.

ITV has form in this area - Millionaire, the obvious example of a massive ratings winner being over-exposed to death.

The thing is, Millionaire is somewhat different to TXF because its ratings started falling after only 2 years. TXF on the other hand is peaking in its 6th/7th year, and ratings have grown since they extended the run-time and number of episodes. I don't think there's scope to increase the run-time any further for the live shows unless they increase the number of contestants because last year's episodes were quite drawn out anyway. It's inevitable that ratings will fall either later this series or in the next couple of years because the 2009 series set a very high bar. A programme running for 7 years is good anyway, let alone peaking for the launch in its 7th year with potential to run for a number of more years. Even if the ratings drop down to 8m within the next 3-5 years, I suspect ITV will still keep it on air (if Cowell lets them) because it'd still be better than nearly every other programme on TV.
