Sky1 are spending millions on original drama and comedy. Perhaps now she works for BSkyB she's getting extra?

Not really much I can add about X Factor this weekend. Doesn't mean we're necessarily on for a record-breaking series - there's so far to go and the bar was set so high last year - but there's certainly none of the drop off some were expecting. Quote:
Sunday 22nd August 2010
BBC One 18:30 - Countryfile: 5.24m (28.0%) inc HD 19:30 - Last of the Summer Wine: 4.56m (21.8%) inc HD 20:00 - Antiques Roadshow: 4.24m (18.3%) 21:00 - Secret Britain: 5.26m (21.5%) BBC Two 10:00 - Something for the Weekend: 1.0m (13.6%) 18:00 - Home Movie Roadshow: 730,000 (4.2%) 19:00 - Dragons' Den: 1.32m (6.6%) 20:00 - Mountain Gorilla: 1.80m (7.8%) inc HD 21:00 - Vexed: 1.91m (7.8%) inc HD 22:00 - Match Of The Day 2: 3.20m (16.5%) ITV1 + HD 14:45 - The X Factor: 1.3m (12.1%) excluding HD 19:00 - Stephen Tompkinson's Australian Balloon Adventure: 2.84m (14.2%) 20:00 - Heartbeat: 5.04m (21.8%) 21:00 - Martin Clunes: Horsepower: 4.48m (18.3%) ---- One surprise is Countryfile - unusual high rating for it. Match of the Day 2 did well, but I'm not really surprised after the surprising results earlier in the day. Secret Britain has been something of a surprise summer success, but I think ITV1 will be satisfied with Horsepower. Heartbeat tops the day again which is a tad embarassing in the circumstances but that argument was raked over a few pages back and I think on balance it seems justified to wrap it up at last. Quote:

I can sort of understand with UKTV and Living, where they can only really commission the cheap stuff - but when Julian Bellamy dismisses "the middling and derivative", you wonder whether he's ever seen the endless property porn on his own channel. Same with Zai Bennett given the observational rubbish ITV2 has made it's name in. I'm not really criticising them for making the shows - they have to look after their numbers, after all. But the pretense that they're all turning their noses up at that sort of TV comes across terribly false. Credit to Peter Fincham for being honest about the practical constraints of commissioning for ITV1 and needing to hit the mass market, not a niche. |

Ive seen some pretty dreadful comments on LOTSW on various sites saying how it should have been strangled at birth and that its been a byword for tedium etc-its obviously forgotten that for all of the eighties and much of the nineties it truly was a national treasure getting audiences that are only wishful thinking in most cases today. Yes things were different but people werent forced to sit down and watch.
As for this series-Iv made a point of watching and its arguably the best this century-there is a bit of a hook storyline whereas alot of the recent series have been aimless meanders. Four and a half million aint bad. ![]() I've been enjoying this year's series too, and it's nice that it was written with an awareness it would be the final series, although the writer stepped back from a "No going back" ending in case the BBC changed their minds again, as they did in 1996 and 2009. |

To be honest I think the people in control with its destiny at the Beeb were not fans and had frankly become embarrassed with it. The Countryfile and Songs of Praise segments are just a rushed attempt to do something when if they could have brushed it under the carpet they would have done.
There has been at least one significant tribute documentary in more favourable times but I dont think there was ever a chance of a golden send off-its time has gone. ) years later, in 2003, by 30 Years of Last of the Summer Wine.

too, especially considering he has recently commissioned '' new and original'' formats like Help my house is falling down, Stand up for the week and coming soon a new retail based show with Mary Portas. Where do they get all these new ideas?

Hope last night's rating kills of 101 Ways to Leave a Gameshow. It was looking like it might have done enough to secure a second season, but it just doesn't deserve one and I hope the BBC take not of the criticism and realise sub-4m isn't worth the cost.
Total Wipeout (4th July - 29th August, 9 episodes) 4.34 5.05 4.68 3.96 4.76 4.81 4.45 2.60 3.56 101 Ways to Leave a Gameshow (10th July - 28th August, 8 episodes) 4.19 4.05 4.11 3.41 3.54 3.39 2.82 |

Good for BBC One and ITV1 with Secret Britain and Horsepower, it's clear Horsepower hit SB but I'm sure ITV will commision more documentaries with Martin Clunes, he's a good host and although I didn't see Horsepower, I thought Islands of Britain was a very good documentary.
Poor for DSB but Terminator 3 did well for Five considering they've shown it a lot. Vexed fell but I think it may get renewed as it's not often that a BBC Two drama does well that isn't a one-off. Reading the channel controller interviews, it's a surprise that Jeff Ford wasn't interviewed but I guess he's only just got the job as director of programme so a strategy isn't in place especially with a change of ownership. |

![]() It's a truly awful name. Why not just call it "ITV Breakfast"? Or "The Breakfast Factor"? "Britain's Got Breakfast"?

To many people it will be GMTV for a few years, i think TVAM is the same if you were around that era, even people today sometimes say TVAM

It's a shame that Dexter didn't get more viewers on Friday, but for me it wasn't convenient to watch it then so I watched the Sunday showing.

Exactly, The X Factor thrives on this sort of thing. They do say there's no such thing as bad publicity and I suppose there's some truth to that (although it depends on the controversy, as Big Brother found out to its cost).
I do still think though that the worst thing for the show would be if nobody was talking about it at all. I doubt this will have much impact either way this week, however. The press are loving it but I doubt anyone will tune in specifically to see if they use autotune again! Given the hype on the first episode this year, I'd expect a fair drop from that but nothing too major (10%-ish). |

![]() ![]() ![]() Ratings have gone up for GMTV lately, ITV should have just overhauled it under the GMTV name rather than renaming it Daybreak. |
