I have no real interest in the world cup apart from the England games - but I don't complain when that's dominating discussion, I just didn't read or post.

I agree - different topics dominate the forum at different times. Even though there's a Soap Ratings Thread we've had EastEnders especially dominate the thread - even on a day when it's not aired - and then comparisons to Coronation Street, how characters coming in and out will affect the show etc. etc. etc. Not saying it's wrong, but certain shows dominate the thread and that's just the way it is.

Personally I think ITV will enjoy an improved performance compared to last for this year's World Cup final.

Apart from the missed England goal on HD, which was obviously a huge mistake at the time, they have actually had quite a good World Cup to be honest. Arguably Chiles has helped bring some real credibility to ITV's football coverage and I'd be surprised not to see this reflected in the ratings tomorrow night, at least to some degree, even if it's only a smidgen higher.

As bad as it was, the HD malfunction only affected around 1 million out of an audience roughly eighteen times that size. The type of person who went out of their way to watch it in HD are never going to choose ITV's coverage over the BBC anyway so I don't expect that to have an impact on ratings.

If I was a veiwer on SD then I'd be really worried that if it could happen on HD then it might happen on SD and would decide that I had more of a chance with the Beeb than ITV.

The ratio will be sizeable. Surely when given the choice of watching something with adverts or without, everyone would choose without?

Even if only a few million watch ITV's coverage, it is still a few million football viewers and all the advertisers that that brings to the channel, rather than Midsomer Murders viewers that are targeted every week.

Most people only tend to watch the actual match itself and not bother with the build up, half time analysis or full time analysis. So adverts aren't a problem on ITV (usually, they show the odd one over goals at times).

The actual match has no ads. That's all most care about. Ads would probably be preferable to some of the dismal post-match banter I've witnessed on the BBC this tournament.

Just to be clear though I will still be watching on the BBC tomorrow night. I haven't gone completely insane, don't worry.

OK, it doesn't explicitly say that, but you'd have to assume that some parts peaked quite a bit over 1m based on the 9/10 statement.

It makes me wonder why people went to Sky News instead of BBC News. I guess their coverage was better, but considering how comprehensively BBC News beat Sky in the Election, I find that... surprising?

Because it is a completely different type of person watching last night versus the Election night. Last night was infotainment not hard news.

Since the launch of Sky News HD I would always choose Sky over BBC. The additional graphics and information on screen are welcome additions and you miss then when changing back to BBC News. Maybe I'm not the only one who is like that?

Sky News seems more popular the further north you go. Put 2 and 2 together, and well you can see why Sky was slightly ahead.

Instead of watching the news at 10pm after BB first show finished on a terrestrial channel, my first instict was to go to Sky News and i had it on there in the background and kept flicking back and forward from the news to the IT Crowd.

Im sure most peoples first instict was to go to Sky News instead of BBC News looks like. Also Kay Burley is quite a contreversial newsreader, maybe people were looking out if she was doing any of the story.

The whole thing was like a bizarre entertainment show. The BBC was very good until Jon Sopel clocked off and then they treated like just another news story. Sky on the other hand was very entertaining all night. Quotes like" Weve got OUR man" and "Its a standoff, its dramatic and its live on Sky" summed up Sky's mentality towards the event.

I'm not saying it isn't, but just that BBC News tends to be ahead in 'big' events.

Also, you say that, but on the day of the Cumbria shootings, BBC beat Sky News looking on BARB.

Sky beat the BBC for Jades funeral and on Michael Jacksons death. Nutter shooting himself isnt that big an event really. I doubt anybody will remember him in 1 years time.

Was anyone else watching the BBC NEWS channel at around 2ish this morning (Just after the ending of the stand off)?

BBC News is always top for the run of the mill day to day stuff, so 95% of the time. For breaking news & quickly developing stories however viewers often flock to Sky News first. So I'm not surprised by last night's ratings.

Also the peak for Sky News came for Sky News at Ten, i.e. when the BBC News channel joined BBC One's bulletin and rolling coverage temporarily halted.

What is the average age of a Sky News viewer in comparison to a BBC News viewer? That could also impact why Sky News sometimes goes ahead of the BBC for certain news events.

I don't think the soaps quite dominate the thread in the same way. Apart from the EastEnders anniversary earlier this year which was not a normal situation. There may be a discussion along those lines you mentioned but then it stops. It doesn't carry on each weekend for months. Even when EE got the huge 21m+ combined audience back in February a couple of days on and people had stopped talking about it. Of course other factors are discussed in here such as scheduling and how a show is performing just not to the same blanket coverage and general discussion those two shows are imo.

Also remember that Sky has HD news and the BBC does not.

That will make it no contest in most HD homes.

I agree, just foes to all those naysayers who said HD news was pointless, the PQ was much superior.
