The margin between the two has generally increased since 1996, but you can see that the gaps closed in the 1998 and 2004 finals. The smaller ratio in 1998 might've been due to ITV's coverage following on from Corrie (12.9m inheritence) and it being Brian Moore's last game commentating. Was 2004 Des's last match as presenter?
Indeed it was. It was his business doing pleasure with you, all that. I said the other week that the Corrie lead-in in 1998 was of no use to ITV as it meant they missed all of the Ronaldo stuff. The Beeb had EastEnders during the build-up, they had three ten-minute episodes set in Paris on Friday (when it wasn't always on Friday), Saturday and Sunday, but I remember Des didn't specifically introduce it during the build-up, he just said "We shall be back shortly" and it was introduced over the balloon.

In fact, like today, ITV were showing the British Grand Prix in 1998 as well. In 2006, the Final was on the same day as the Wimbledon Men's Final and when ITV got its lowest share ever, I think, some ITV bod said "Major sporting events always affect ratings". They were showing one of them!

101 Ways to Leave a Gameshow had a decent start, and the breakdown's very surprising considering what people were saying about it on here. It has a really good lead-in with Toy Story 2 next week so it could hold up okay.

Casualty's rating is a bit low but it's probably more prone than other shows to being dented by the football. Live at the Apollo repeats excellently so no wonder the BBC keeps airing old episodes. The football on ITV1 rated worse than I expected - was thinking it would get 6m excluding HD (3rd place match in 2006 had 6.8m).
I dunno about Toy Story 2, they showed Toy Story 1 on the day of the Britain's Got Talent final last year and a fat lot of good that did. It's about the millionth screening. As for the third place match, in 2006 it followed the last in the series of Doctor Who and opposite it was Mrs Doubtfire, Millionaire and some boxing, as opposed to the lottery and Casualty which'll always pull in a decent audience.

Also agree with the audience bit. We have loads of new fans these last two years as well as losing old ones.... there could only be less than a million fans who are still watching BB11 that watched BB1, there could be only 1,000 maybe.

With TWC ending tonight.... we are screwed if it goes to E.T and penalties, but this week should be quite good.
I reckon we can get a 3m+ official.
So, what department of Endemol do you work in?

Wasn't Steve Jones originally supposed to present something called "Dropzone"?

My prediction for the WC final tonight is that ITV will be a lot closer than usual to BBC for the first half (maybe 2:1 instead of the usual 4:1). At which point, it depends on how exciting a half it has been. If it's been boring without much to discuss, then ITV will hold up quite well. If however, there's plenty to review at half time, then people will switch over to BBC to see the analysis rather than the ads and may well then stay with them for the second half.

K
ITV's coverage hasn't been that bad, but the natural tendency except among heavy ITV viewers is for people to watch BBC One.

I'm saying "We" from a BB fan point of view.

Toy Story 2 is being shown only two days before the release of Toy Story 3 so I expect it will attract a higher than normal ratings. We have seen films getting high ratings due to the release of their sequel like Indiana Jones, The Da Vinci Code, Night at the Museum to name but a few

Finding Nemo will do well as well as it's only the second or third screening, I expect 2-3m for it.

I think ITV's coverage has definetely been better this year, but even so in recent years there has been an increased tendancy to choose BBC1 over ITV1 due to some of the negative publicity. Ratings wise I think ITV's coverage has seen a boost due to Chiles, but when faced with the option of watching the same thing on BBC1 I think there could be a larger ratio than ever, with ITV's coverage well below 3m and BBC1's possibly over 11m.

Probably best to choose BBC1 that way there's not much chance of you missing a goal...

Most will
We were talking about this at work the other day and most said they would rather the coverage from the BBC
ITV might as well show heartbeat or something and leave the BBC to it tonight

They are out - just haven't been posted. MattJ had Saturday's ratings, but doesn't have Friday's.

DS hopefully will have them up tonight. (PJMillar said yesterday he has them, while Digital I have them as the news peak was posted on Twitter yesterday).

As for today, I'll be surprised if the F1 gets over 4/4.5m average - the race lasted 1 hour 20 minutes, while post race stuff lasted the exact same time! (in total, BBC's coverage today including the Red Button went from 12:10 to 16:40 - 4 and a half hours)

Even if they only get 5 million viewers, this is still good for ITV and I can't see them ditching the World Cup for Heartbeat which could tank against BBC One, which would have a monopoly on the football and massive ratings.

Erm, no - ITV have always simulcasted the World Cup final with BBC.

Erm, no - ITV have always simulcasted the World Cup final with BBC.
It's also the only time they show a match simultaneously now unless England did the unbelievable and reached the semi finals.
However, ITV can look back on this world cup with a sense of achievement as they've bagged the two biggest audiences this year and even non England night matches have pulled in 7-10 million viewers.

Also, Im interested to see how James Corden's show rated. He seems to be shedding viewers each show and I havent watched since England went out.
Didn't notice this earlier - but definitely less than 2.43m excluding HD.

Just watching the Closing Ceremony on BBC News. Very watchable, surprised ITV1 aren't covering it as opposted to a Ladies of Letters repeat.

Was just thinking the same - good of BBC News to carry it, buy seems a bit out of place there.

I can't believe the rating for 101 Ways, there is no way it would have got that rating if it was on ITV.

I get the worrying feeling that 101 Ways and Tonight's the Night are going to be a strong line up this summer

If 101 ways is a success expect a fast tracked second series and repeats mixed in with new episodes shown practically 52 weeks of the year.

Besides 'the error', ITV's coverage has been particularly strong this year.
There has been lots of comments about Adrian, but Steve Rider would have just been dull with all comments being that people can't take to him hosting football.
The presentation, theme music, studio etc all look good. It's strange that ITV still do the eleborate 'ITV Sports Presents' stuff and the BBC's opening titles are now increasingly shorter and less expensive looking.

Regardless of this, with no-ads and the likes of Lineker and Hansen being like comfortable slippers, the BBC will win hands down.

ITV did show the world cup final in 2006. In recent times they have only opted out of the Euro 2008 final to show The Royal & Taggart, which is fair enough as that was a tournament England didn't qualify for, so interest was much less in general.

These are the ratings from recent finals:

Euro 2008 final
BBC1
19:45 - 21:45 Germany v Spain match - 10.6m (41%)
* peak 12.1m
* whole coverage 8.9m (38%)

BBC2
20:00 Top Gear new - 4.7m (18%)
ITV1
20:00 - 21:00 The Royal new - 4.3m (17%)
21:00 - 22:30 Taggart rpt - 3.7m (15%)

World Cup 2006 final - went to penalties
BBC1
19:00 - 22:00 Italy v France match - 14m (56.4%)
* peak 17m (60.8%)
ITV1
19:00 - 22:00 Italy v France match - 2.8m (11.4%)
* peak 3.5m (12.4%)

Euro 2004 final
BBC1
19:45 - 21:45 Greece v Portugal match - 10.9m (46%)
* peak 12.7m
ITV1
19:45 - 21:45 Greece v Portugal match - 3.4m (14%)
* peak 3.8m

World Cup 2002 final
BBC1
11:00 - 14:30 Germany v Brazil full coverage - 7.9m
ITV1
11:00 - 14:30 Germany v Brazil full coverage - 1.9m (14%)

Brace yourself, James Corden's World Cup Live, excluding HD and for the tape checked slot had 1.96m (10.1%).

So beaten by BB on a Saturdau (worst rated day of the week) which should get around 2.1m with +1.... brilliant

I did know that after England were knocked out that his show would fall, but i never expected it to go sub 2.5m, never mind sub 2m.
