I wasnt that far out with the World Cup ratings, predicting 20 million, and the actual figure was around 21 million. However, ITV did worse than I thought, only attracting a peak audience of 3.8 million.

The best thing for ITV would be if they could share exclusivity over the years with the BBC in regards to the Final - but the BBC would never accept that. If it wasn't for the England matches, their deal would be pretty poor compared to the BBCs, but I guess that's the price you pay for two high rated games.

Friday night seemed to have been hurt by the Moat coverage on the news channels, but even considering that Doc Martin especially struggled. My Family'll bounce back I'm sure.

What did Doc Martin get, was that down due to the weather/news coverage?

It did beat BB but only by 0.20 then again it did pretty well considering it was a repeat.

Ratings sources are rubbish these days. We have more of them than ever before but only a few actually bother to update regularly. Out of the ones that do, they provide very little detail. (MediaTel, Broadcast, Attentional)

It's getting so bad that it's now Monday evening and we still don't know, for example, how many people watched Coronation Street on Friday night!

Shame on you MediaGuardian especially. Although DS is becoming bad as well- the soap ratings section hasn't updated since Tuesday.

I think its partially due to the World Cup in that there isn't much to report on, but from today its back to normal, so hopefully that'll be reflected in the reports - I'm 99% sure that unless the ratings are delayed, they'll be a full Monday roundup in the morning.

As for DS, PJ said on Saturday he had Friday's ratings, but as of now, the articles on the actual site are invisible. Also, regarding the Soaps, Kris Green, their Soaps Editor has left to join the EastEnders storyline team, so the ratings section over there may be left a bit 'on the side' for a little while Daniel Kilkelly I think takes over.

There's always something to report on. On Friday for example we know the news coverage was hugely popular on the Raoul Moat situation. So you could easily get a load of material out of that. In addition to that the soaps, the concluding part of Dive (good opportunity to slip in a few puns), BBC One's new comedy block, etc etc. Regardless of the football tournament taking place, there was still an awful lot going on TV wise.

Sorry about the rant, but it just bugs me because if I had access to these figures, I would like to think I would provide more detailed and timely analysis than is currently on offer. We can't even rely on the officials these days with BBC One and Five data missing again this week.

You're perfectly entitled to the rant.

Oh, I agree - my first comment was mainly a reply to why Media Guardian haven't been doing much reporting in the past few weeks, on the whole (with the exception the past few days) apart from the football there's been not a lot to report on.

And I wholeheartedly agree with the comments made about the news coverage, which has been ignored by Broadcast and others. Definitely agree about the last bit - websites like DS also need to update with overnights quicker in my view, as after few days after they render useless.

(maybe we should all club in a tenner to get access to the data )

That's not such a bad idea!

On a different note, are Sky1 really showing an episode of The Biggest Loser USA from 2008 in primetime tonight?

I didn't think Sky would have had to go to a 2008 import, things must be bad.

My Family was done about three years ago really. It just about weathered Kris Marshall leaving initially but then just hung around a little bit longer than it should have.

They must be! The most reason series shown in the UK earlier this year from 2009 had around 50,000 viewers on Sky Real Lives. I can't see it doing much better on Sky1, especially if it's a repeat.

I know Sky Real Lives is on the way out and they may be looking to secure slots for some of its more popular programming on the main channel, but is 50k really good enough for Sky1 primetime nowadays?

Sky Real Lives is a niche channel and is an obscure PPV channel so naturally won't do as well. Sky1 have flooded daytime and sometimes peak time in Biggest Loser USA and Australia, whilst ITV have commissioned another series for prime time. Obviously broadcasters see some kind of pull in the format.

im surprised ITV 2 has not tried to pounce on the US version of the show, like it has some of ITVs other reality shows, that said should it come to it they could try for the Aussie version of the show.

BREAKING NEWS

So You Think You Can Dance Australia not renewed for 2011, Ten instead picks up Don't Stop Believing.

http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2010/07/...nt-series.html

Not entirely surprising. SYTYCD didn't perform very well this year as those of you who follow my daily reports will know. However I'm surprised Ten have commissioned a local version of DSB before it has premiered in the UK. I'd have thought they might keep an eye on how it performs over here first before making a commitment.

Still, with Glee also shown by Ten and still growing its audience in the Australian market, the programme has a good chance of success.

I'm surprised Fremantle & FOX didn't get this one off the ground first in the US. There is going to be a search for the next member of the cast, but not until summer 2011 and it's not going to be on FOX (it'll be on Oxygen, the cable channel where Glee is going to be repeated).

I doubt the format will last too long but there could be a hit series or two in there while Glee is a hit.

Have you seen the shorts that Five have been running today? If so, what do you think? Do you think it will be a hit in the UK?

Not seen them today but I've seen the advert that was posted on the link above.

I really don't have a clue if it's going to be a hit.

I think the idea is an obvious one and a good one given the current success of Glee. The title is pretty good, it should appeal to those who have watched Glee. Emma Bunton's a pretty decent choice for host and Shine did a good job making Got To Dance.

On the other hand, I'm not too keen on the panel. I'm not sure Glee has a big enough audience in the UK to support a spin-off on Five (which has no connection to Glee). Especially when that channel doesn't have a solid background in this kind of show.

I'll definitely watch it (but then again, I was kind of obsessed with Glee! ) And I think this is probably going to be Five's best chance of bringing in a hit in this genre. It seems to tick as many boxes as possible (obviously they can't tick the "solid background" box until they find a hit!).

It's the kind of show that I want to do well and not just because I like Glee but also because anything that encourages other broadcasters to try and make something with a bit of ambition can only be a good thing.

If Shine can produce DSB well, then it bodes well for Must Be The Music. I think that will do well too, and they've pulled a genius stroke by having Fearne Cotton has the host who is quite popular in certain music circles and also has Radio 1 etc. Shes also anti-Cowell which will help too, and Sky1 are hoping to have it on air by the time X Factor is back.

Just caught up wth Fridays Myfamily and must say it's alot funnier clearly the new writer is doing a good job.

I think the ratings were low do to lack of promotion as i saw no ads for Myfamily only the Old guys which really isn't funny.
Im sure MF ratings will get higher as the series goes on.
Don't forget people there will be an xmas special and series 11 next year

Seems ITV were the choice for the world cup final then

Hello,

Sorry about the lack of DS ratings in the last week, in the soaps section particularly. Our soaps editor Kris Green left last Friday, and I was also off for a week...however, I'm starting in the offices tomorrow and will get everything completely up to date. Andrew's daily ratings reports on Monday-Friday have been quick to be subbed onto the site for a few weeks now.

Something that everyone should be aware of is:-

Any Digital Spy sub-editor can now put a ratings report on the website, which has only been the case for this month. Before that, it was only either Neil Wilkes or somebody else who would be able to check things.

So, as I say, sorry about it all - but we are actually looking at plans to make our daily reports more detailed...

We want to see what you think of the following:

- Top 10 Terrestrials and Top 5 Multichannels at the bottom of each article, along with more details on 5-minute and 15-minute peaks. As you might've seen from my weekend reports recently, I have tried to include ratings outside of primetime.
- From next week, I hope to be able to provide all-day shares on the thread. Dancc and DMN have also asked me for data before, and I have usually had time to update you all.

Thanks,
PJ

P.S. Anyone who has any queries/suggestions send me a PM, and I'll try to be quick to respond, and I will either be able to answer or pass the questions on.

We will be trying to provide a more punctual and detailed service than Broadcast and Media Guardian in the next few months.

Thanks for those who do read our reports, we do try to serve you as best we can - but hopefully you all realise that we have other responsibilities too.

Sounds good. I think, though, for the terrestrials and multichannel, it may be better to have a top 20 and top 10 respectively - as the top 10 for terrestrial (as suggested) would get eaten up half by the soaps and half by news programmes - a top 20 on the other hand would have a wider depth as such. Same as the top 10 for multichannel.

I'll be very interested to see how tonight's drama battle goes. I watched both and The Silence was OK, but quite slow and dull at times. I wondered whether to bother recording Identity but I'm really glad I did as it was much better than last week's opening episode, and was fast paced and exciting. Hopefully the first episode syndrome won't hit Identity too as it was a lot better tonight and it deserves to hold up well. I'd like both the dramas to do well though.

BB eviction show ratings obviously down since the crowd was so large that most of the BARB viewers were at the studio :P

P.S. Sorry, just couldn't help throwing a bit of spin in there.

In all seriousness, those Friday BB ratings aren't at all great. Excuses or not it should cause concern if the evictions don't pick up if Endemol have any hope of shopping the show (that is unless they buy Five).
