AFAIk there is no cut off in the amount of episodes required for syndication. The 100 number is desirable for networks as its makes for neat scheduling [ 5 episodes per week X 20 weeks] Ugly betty has recently ended and has gone into syndication with over 80 episodes approx.

Well I was reading the BBC digital text thing at the time and the picture changed in the window (which in theory can't happen as Sky News is on a different mux), then went black. I then exited to go full screen and it was black, they went to Sky News and then it returned to BBC1.

North West on Freeview for the record, but as you say considering there is no mention of it anywhere else it must have been a bug my end.

Thanks Jake. Those ratings (especially for THM) are better than I expected. The 6.55m repeat average for THM is about 40-50% of the audience for original episodes on CBS. That sort of ratio would never happen over here for a BBC1/ITV1 drama repeat on a digital channel, and I can now understand why syndication is so important in the States.

Actually if it's not the BBC I think my PVR has gone mad. It went to 4Music at 87 minutes then Sky News a couple of minutes later before returning to MOTD once the game was over and showing highlights of Paraguay/Japan.

I think they're pretty much unlimited (perhaps there's a cut-off date?). NCIS can get more than 3m a night at 8pm on USA, it's a huge part of that channels success.

These deals have been done well in advance with the networks involved hedging on the idea that both shows will make it to (about) 100 episodes. They won't start broacasting the repeats until September 2013.


That's something slightly different. Repeats get sold to local stations (which is what those numbers are for) to broadcast when their affiliated network has no networked programming (for FOX, that's nearly all hours outside 8-10pm) but these latest deals are for sales to cable networks. The article says "the station portion of the two shows' off-network sale will be tackled later" so that will add on more money per episode. The Big Bang Theory got $1.5m for its sale to cable network TBS and then a further $500k.

Within weeks of it starting, CBS sold reruns of NCIS:LA to the USA network (home of NCIS repeats) for $2.2m an episode.

It's a big deal for cable networks because they can use them to build the channel (think E4 & Friends). But it's also a big bet. TNT, one of the top cable networks, had to write down the value of its rights to Without a Trace to the value of $104m.

The fact that highlights shows are often shown at a very late hour can't help.

The amount of times Sue Barker has wrapped up coverage of The Grand National/London Marathon/Athletics etc by saying that there are highlights 'tonight on BBC1 at 11.40pm' or something similar can't help.

A rare bit of good luck for ITV's World Cup coverage today. Their 8th pick afternoon game went to Penalties, this should have boosted the rating in the 5pm hour

The first 120 mins was 0-0 though, so I expect the rest of the game was a deserved 8th pick game.

According to another thread, they're hinting at Paul O'Grady presenting The 5 O'Clock Show, could give it the well needed boost it needs!

Those ratings above would be Broadcast [terristrial] channel ratings rather than Cable [digital channel] ratings.

THM is syndicated in local channels on CW and on cable on FX.

There isn't a huge amount of info out there on cable reruns apart from NCIS (which is in that link). I know the strength of Family Guy & The Office on TBS contributed to Conan O'Brien's decision to go there. And I think TNT does alright with Bones as well. But I can't actually find any proper numbers for them.

FX made a play for The Big Bang Theory, hoping to pair it with Two and a Half Men as they are on CBS but lost out in the end.

the matches today werent great but the pens were exciting in the paraguay match, so it may pull rating up - can see the spain match figures dropping off near end though as it was a lacklustre game - two rest days now so back to regular schedules

Yep, I found it very hard to find them anywhere apart from the odd press release.

Its interesting to see how the syndication market can have some affect on what the broadcast networks are commisioning and how syndiction fees are becoming more important.
So its no surprise a lot of the networks next autumn are turning to more Crime procedurals and comedys which are less seralised.

Common sense, I think. As the World Cup has demonstrated, viewers don't generally care for highlights of stuff that was widely available in primetime anyway. In Beijing, it made sense to have a round-up show because so much of the action happened at inconvenient times. Essentially, the main evening coverage will incorporate reruns of British medals anyway, in the same way the WC afternoon matches are covered in the evening show.

The Olympics is more than three events a day. It would be ridiculous for the BBC not to have a highlights programme after the late news - it's not like they'd have anything of more worth to put on anyhow.

And all this bollocks about the iPlayer - indeed if people want to watch the games through the iPlayer an hour-long highlights package is going to be crucial - on demand viewers won't want to be sifting through hundreds of hours of live coverage.

Live coverage??
If you read the blog properly you'd see the debate is whether there is a need for a traditional highlights programme which would take precedence over live coverage which would usually air up till midnight. As all the crucial and surprising achievements by team GB would be repeated endlessly anyway.

A highlights package would air on the red button or on the i player. Like it has since Athens. Nowhere in his blog does he say he expects people to waft through hours of live coverage on the I player .

Syndication is very important to studios as they start making money on series, Jerry Seinfeld and Ray Romano have made tons of money from reruns of Seinfeld and Everybody Loves Raymond which are still showed in local and cable syndication plus international syndication.

NCIS on USA garners more than 2-4m which is better than what some of their originals do and it fits in with their brand, FX recently bought Two and a Half Men which fits in with their edgy brand plus it has a hit in local syndication and repeats really well. The Big Bang Theory will no doubt be popular in syndication but TBS will start with weekly episodes first before stripping once or twice a day. TNT bought Bones at a far lower cost than Cold Case and Without a Trace and it is proving a winner and A&E bought The Sopranos at the cost of $2.5m per episode but bought Criminal Minds at $600,000 an episode but Criminal Minds has been very successful whereas they had to write off the cost of The Sopranos which is semi serialized.

The UK doesn't have the same culture simply because we don't produce as many episodes of our shows due to financial reasons.

The football seemed to struggle relatively speaking with nothing but Rev having an excellent night. Big Brother appears to be dipping badly now.

Paraguay v Japan should see a boost for the penalties but it sounds like it was a dire match before then so may have lost viewers to Wimbledon in boredom.

CNN shake up is continuing at a pace. Larry King has announced he is leaving his programme in the Autumn. Of course lots of speculation about who could replace him, Piers Morgan, Katie Couric, Ryan Seacrest etc.

Surely the reason that the BBC passed on the Friday games is that there is a good chance of a Murray/Nadal semi final on Friday afternoon maybe going into Friday evening.
