I had to laugh at Heartbeat's rating - there's no rational explanation for that!
I'm sure it will have cheered ITV chiefs, and Adrian "Mr Breakfast" Chiles, that a cheapo reliable old warhorse like Heartbeat can more than double ITV's Sunday night audience after a prohibitively expensive, deeply unfashionable, little-watched, advertiser-unfriendly, big TV turn-off such as an ITV Sport presentation of the World Cup Final.
They should have "launched" the "new" series of Heartbeat last Sunday methinks...

14.88m is a sensational BBC1/HD match average over 3 hours, simulcast with a rival channel, even if nobody was actually watching on that network apart from the 2.7m grannies waiting patiently for Corrie, Heartbeat or Sunday Night at the London Paladium to come on.
The actual match average should I think be higher than that because BARB has the "Post Match" down as starting at 22.23 which can't be right as they had finished the presentations and started the studio wrap-up by 10.05pm IIRC - the show went off air at 10.30pm.
Either way, it compares very well with the big numbers the England matches got for BBC1 and ITV. If only we had a decent team who could compete in tournaments, we could have seen some simply jaw-dropping ratings this summer. Ah well...
Anyone brave enough to have a stab at posting an updated Top 20 of 2010 yet?
