What are the advantages of DVD-RAM over DVDR+ and DVDR-? I've heard that with DVD-RAM, you can start watching a programme while it's STILL recording. Can't you do this with DVDR+/-?

Also, is it true that DVDR- discs have to be 'finalised' before they can be played an another DVD Player?

Finally, is it true that you can't record Macrovision protected films? I've turned off Macrovision on my DVD Player, but I'm told that this only turns off the 'analog' Macrovision, and the 'digital' Macrovision remains, stopping ANY recording from my DVD Player (digital source), to a digital recording device (DVD Recorder).
Is this correct?

Note: I'm talking about independant DVD Recorder's, NOT the Computer/PC ones.

Thanks!

Apart from playing while your still recording, you can erase sections, make chapters and play lists, like video you can record over previous recordings, dvd rams disc are very cheap now I have a pansonic and 12 hour DVD RAM disk are only £4 each from the panasonic e-shop.

The only reason you can "pause" or start watching the programme while it is still recording is the RAM act's as a buffer for the DVD burner.

....Meaning..... it records the first few minutes or so (can possibly be changed in settings) before writing to disc.

It can possibly be changed so that if you get to the end of a 30minute programme and you do not wish to burn it to DVD then you have the chance of wiping it from the RAM

DVD-RAM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW all write as they go unless the recorder is specified to do otherwise. e.g. a hard disk recorder is present

RAM refers to the method used for writing data to the disk and not necicarily that the player has excessive amounts of local memory for caching video.

Traditionaly CD's & DVD are "linear" sequential access backing stores. This means data is writen throughout the disk from begining to end constantly so that it plays back similar to how a LP record plays back. These disks are finalised when no more data is required to be saved on them.

DVD-RAM is different in that data can be stored at any point throughout the disk (randomly), that can be addressed randomly with reference to a suitable address index, or table of contents making it similar in structure to a Flopy disk or hard disk. Effectivley finalising the disk as it goes. By reading, writing and finalising little bits at a time the recorder gives the impression that it is both reading and writing at the same time.

I have a grundig DVD recorder. When I try and play the recorded DVD's on my DVD player on my computer the computer crashes. Anyone have the same problem? pre-recored DVD's are ok and do not crash the machine
