It took Guns N Roses 17 years to complete/release Chinese Democracy.

That's quite a while to wait

Is that a record or are there other contenders?

Just what I was thinking. She almost disappeared after The Red Shoes and only gave two interviews in this long absence. However, her mother died and then she had a child, so she had other things to deal with. Yet her long absences aren't anything new: she vanished after The Dreaming didn't too well in the charts- in an era when young musicians were expected to release an album every year- and people were saying whatever happened to Kate Bush. Then she reappeared spectacularly with The Hounds of Love and became massive again.

^ Aerial was worth the wait, in my opinion, it's splendid.
Kirsty MacColl took about 10 years after her debut album "Desperate Character" to complete "Kite", which again, was worth the wait.

Another oddity used to be the B52s who used to have years between hit records and Carly Simon who seemed to score a hit every 5 years.

Vashti Bunyan holds the record I believe - 35 years
1970 - Just Another Diamond Day
2005 - Lookaftering

There's someone else - a male folk singer who did one album in 1968 or so and then another one last year...I'm damned if I can remember the name though.

My Bloody Valentine's Loveless came out in 1991. Seems wildly optimistic to expect a follow up though.

Sade left 10 years between Lovers rock and solider of love.
The Eagles left 28 years between the long run and long way out of Eden.
The Yarbirds left 35 years between little games (1968) and Birdland (2003)!

Kate Bush can take as long as she wants and do what she wants in my book, the lady is a genius, someone who a lot of the young female artist of today can learn a lot from, arise Dame Kate Bush.

The Klaxons have been taking the piss with their latest album although I'm probably just being impatient considering it's only been 3 years since Myth's

Quite short compared with some of the gaps mentioned here, but prog supergroup Transatlantic had an 8-year gap between Bridge Across Forever (2001) and The Whirlwind (2009)

Human League, last album was out in 2001 and new one out this year, so 9 year gap

usually it was a 5 year gap in between

But well worth the wait , huh

I`m sure Boston had a huge gap as well , and again well worth the wait .

It was rumored that they would release a new single three years ago. Oh, well

There may be loads where one or other weren't hits.

I gather you mean when both are relatively successful?

And studio albums too, presumably?

Yes on both. I supose there could be a lot of contentious issues. Is GnR the same band?
What about if a band breaks up then reforms 30 years later etc.
