*For unbranded models.

Just to let people know that the HTC Hero has finally been upgraded! However, if you have a branded model you will have to wait another few weeks at least.

Go to Settings About Phone, Update and press "Check Now". Then let your phone do the rest.

No Live Wallpapers... =[ Everything else is there though.

I'm happy enough with the update - shame it took so long though!

My phone is branded Vodafone, so no update at the moment. Why does the update for branded phones take so much longer?

Nice one! My option for the update is there. Now I'll just have to wait until I can connect to wifi.

That's shocking that you have had to wait this long to get an update. That alone would put me off buying an Android phone.

Unlike the iPhone and the Blessed Jobs, you still have the choice to put a cooked ROM on.

Might not be for everyone, however.

Only took the iPhone a few years to get copy and paste and multitasking, though.

Lets not turn it into one of those conversations.

The delay was HTC and nothing to do with Android.

i love android but hate Sense UI, Touchwiz, Blur and all the other crapware skins. Unfortunately I am stuck my orange Hero until December. After that I'll only consider android phones that dont require a skin.

You need the "Pre-update". Set your phone's date to August and you should get a message telling you to add an update. Install it and you'll be set.

You do realise you can completely disable Sense?

Some people have been calling for Sense to be integrated into the main Android OS.

But you will still be waiting for HTC to issue an upgrade which DOES incorporate Sense whether you have it enabled or not.

My Nexus gets Android 2.2 this week

When I set the date to August, it just resets to todays date. And I disabled the network time set?

All I did on my Hero was set the date forward a month [by turning off "Use Network Settings"] and as soon as I had done it a message popped up. However, that might just be because mine is non-branded.

You cant completely disable and remove Sense, if you could you would be able to install 2.1 months ago.

It might also be because Google would have been developing a ROM ready to go in time for not long after the release of the sourcecode. It may also have something to do with the Nexus One being the hardware they do their testing on.

Do HTC and others get the same luxury? Or did they get the source a few days ago like the rest of us?

That's not how it works.

Sense is really just an application.

If you don't like it, you can set it to not start when the phone is switched on and to use the default Android home screen instead (or a different third party home screen if you prefer).

Some of the apps included with the phone look and work like Sense, but they aren't actually part of the Sense Applicaton.

Because HTC has done a lot of customisation with the Sense application and the other things they have changed on the phone, a dramatic change to the underlying OS like Android 2.1 provides could have a serious impact on how Sense works.

As such, HTC rewrote Sense to make the best use of the new OS - this is what took the extra time.

Well of course that's the reason! Did anyone suggest different?

Simply if you want Android updates as soon as they are released from Google then the presence of a third party skin on top of Android itself will always ensure there is a delay.

I think you ignored what I said.

I said that it wasn't just due to the Sense UI, but because Google would have had the source for far longer than HTC, Samsung, or Motorola. They can therefore tune things for their own hardware well before anyone else can, so when the source code is released to everyone, a ROM for their own phone can follow.

Of course, if HTC and co. DO get access to the source before its general release, that invalidates my point. Does anyone know if this is the case?

I sent a tweet to the T-Mobile support team asking what is going on and they replied to say a message has been added to their website at approx 3pm today - looks like mid July at the earliest :

G2 Touch software update
Posted: 2 hours ago

Hi everyone,

Some news on the two latest software updates for the G2 Touch.

Firstly, please ensure that you have a backup of any personal data kept on your phone (i.e contacts, messages, applications etc) before you perform any of these updates - as you may lose all data you have stored when you install these updates.

For the 1st update, as some of you know we recently released a maintenance update for the G2 Touch which some people had problems installing. We stopped the update while we looked into these issues but the rollout will continue again over the course of the next few days. Your phone should prompt you to install the maintenance update, but if it doesn’t, don’t worry – you’ll get prompted the next time your phone checks for updates.

If you experience any problems installing the update please download and install the current G2 Touch software which you can find on HTC’s support website. Full instructions for installing the update can be found on HTC’s website . Please note, installing this software will wipe your handset, so please ensure you back up any data you need prior to installing. You only need to install the software from HTC’s website if you encounter problems installing the initial maintenance update. Once you have installed the software from HTC’s website you will be prompted to install the maintenance update the next time your phone checks for updates.

Once you’ve updated your phone with the maintenance update, you’ll be ready to get the 2nd update. We expect this to rollout in mid-July and this will update your phone to Android 2.1 - Éclair. Again, before you install this update you should make sure you have all your personal data backed up.

Regards
