iphone using data when first turned on
Hi,
In anticipation of o2 cutting my unlimnited data allowance in october or whenever they are planning on doing it I have been keeping an eye on my data allowance and have noticed data usage every morning when i switch it on. Now ive kept an eye on it when botting up and its always with range of my wifi and connected to it according to the icon so how can this be!? Heres a few entires in my data allowance page on o2: 09 Jun 10 07:24:35 idata.o2.co.uk 3575 0.000 10 Jun 10 08:48:57 idata.o2.co.uk 25693 0.000 11 Jun 10 07:38:27 idata.o2.co.uk 1830 0.000 12 Jun 10 08:36:21 idata.o2.co.uk 13902 0.000 13 Jun 10 10:29:17 idata.o2.co.uk 1157 0.000 14 Jun 10 07:27:48 idata.o2.co.uk 4974 0.000 15 Jun 10 07:27:26 idata.o2.co.uk 8940 0.000 16 Jun 10 07:21:18 idata.o2.co.uk 4081 0.000 17 Jun 10 07:32:28 idata.o2.co.uk 27 0.000 18 Jun 10 10:33:03 idata.o2.co.uk 23474 0.000 20 Jun 10 10:58:34 idata.o2.co.uk 422 0.000 21 Jun 10 07:27:48 idata.o2.co.uk 16251 0.000 23 Jun 10 07:44:03 idata.o2.co.uk 27530 0.000 24 Jun 10 07:37:05 idata.o2.co.uk 29327 0.000 26 Jun 10 09:06:09 idata.o2.co.uk 1325 0.000 27 Jun 10 09:41:50 idata.o2.co.uk 4877 0.000 28 Jun 10 07:31:30 idata.o2.co.uk 37468 0.000 These are all times when i booted up my phone and as you can see the amounts vary wildly and are quickly adding up! |

Have you checked the usage meter on the phone itself?

Perhaps it's like my phone and wi-fi only turns on when the phone is physically turned on.
Edit: Deleted original message as I realised I'd got the question wrong. |

Assuming those numbers are megabytes, that covers about three quarters of a month and you haven't even reached half the monthly allowance. I don't think you have much to worry about.

Sorry, I've totally mucked up the this conversation history in this thread. Are those figures bytes or megabytes?

the above is kb. So the total of that given is 200mb which is a heck of a lot of data to not know where its going!

It's most likely apps running or checking for updates or finding your location, e-mail checking in with server to see if you have e-mail. Even if it doesn't download anything it still uses a bit of data. it all adds up quite quickly if you do not manually amend your settings for each app not to use push notifications and location based info.
Not only does it use data, but also uses battery life. once i had turned off all the pushes i don'r really need on mine, i found my battery life extended by almost 50% (rough estimate). |

I'm pretty sure that the data use registers when the connection does. So those amounts aren't occuring at those times, they are the data used up to those times from the time the connection was made.
So there is no mystery data transfer when you reboot. |

From what I have read people who took a contract out before the changes came into place it might not change due to a change of TOS being forced so you may find you are not affected, this is purely based on what I have read this so this may not be the case.

So I have turned off all notifications and set my emails to manual receive so there really should be no data usage unless I instigate it.
Turned on my radio yesterday morning and turned on my phone. For about 4 minutes after bootup there was the failair interference on the radio signalling data comms. Sure enough on my o2 data usage there was 77mb recorded at 7:34.

right so im guessing this is just some sort of billing total being done at not actual usage?
Im confused then as to why it only happens when the phone is on? Can i also suggest other people check their data usage and see if they see similar? |
